Hey all;

I want to repaint a block wall in an attached garage. Block was previously painted and is very dry-No soil contact from other side
1. Paint is not peeling, should I prime?
2. recommendation for paint type and brand to paint block?

Thanks,

Go to your local Home Depot store and see what the paint dept. has to suggest. You'll probably need to know what type of paint was used previously in order to find something compatible when you re-coat the existing block. Good luck! Hopefully no sandblasting will be needed.

If it is clean and dry and not peeling, any good quality latex paint will work.

Any light flaking can be brushed off by hand with a wire brush. A quick hose down the day before is a good idea. Use a medium to long nap roller.

Do yourself a favor and go to a real paintstore,and ask them advise.

+1 on going to a proper professional paint store. Even better is to pick a store and find out what brands they sell, then check out the manufacturer's website and call their tech line if you have further questions. This way you get it straight from the horse's mouth.

I painted a block wall years ago so I'm not up on the latest formulations, but I remember the paint being very thick and block sucking up lots of paint. If yours has a well adherent paint layer currently you'll need much less paint for another coat. Clean your wall with a strong solution of TSP, rinse well, let dry, then paint with the manufacturer's recommended product.

I did some block on my house and talked to the guys at sherwin williams...

they told me to clean it up with TSP, and a stiff brush to get all loose paint, dirt, grime off. then rinse and let dry. then put on a coat of Loxon Concrete & Masonry Primer/Sealer or two. then you can paint if you so desire with some latex, which is what I did since it was outside and recommended. I did White and mine came out great and 4 years later still looking good !! and easy clean up.

Cleaning and Prep is critical !!

You can also get the Loxon Tinted if desired, they recommend top coat if outside and exposed to elements to prevent degradation.

TSP is great for any exterior cleaning. If you have mildew/moss, add some bleach to the soapy water. Rinsing is important.

Obviously the sales people at SW don't read their own instructions on that primer

• Seals and adheres to concrete, brick, stucco and plaster (No mention of existing paint.)
• Conditions porous masonry surfaces
Previously painted masonry is not porous and does not require a primer/sealer.

I live in Florida I have painted many a block wall. if bare fresh block it needs to be sealed. other than that pressure wash and paint the better the paint the longer it last. I just repainted my house and building a new shop. use a sprayer if you can

let me go further...

we put on an addition, new block foundation, wanted to paint it to match existing. when i talked to the people at SW and they explained to me in order to match paint and be seamless they recommend to tsp existing, and then PRIME the entire foundation block, this would also ensure solid color and no variation. i will say the loxon went on smooth, granted it is THICK, and it sealed the block great, no issues sticking to existing paint, bare spots, and such.

if you have a completely painted surface then tsp and paint it up. bare spots i would prime and seal
