Painting Concrete Block

So I am painting away in my garage. It has block walls because I live in Florida.

So every coat the little holes in the concrete block get filled in a bit more.

Its looking better and better every coat, even though the color is uniform already.

I am tempted to put a 4th coat of paint on. Or should I just use putty and a knife to fill in all the little divots?

Its amazing how much better a garage can look with just a solid coat of paint.

It makes it feel "clean."

Well, damn. I didn't know they made this stuff.

I guess I will know for the next time around.

Thanks!

As others have said, definitely use block filler. You can still use it now, but you're going to use it and then a final paint coat instead of one coat of block filler and one coat of paint if you had used it first.

We used the Loxon block primer/filler from S-W on some block storage buildings and it
really helped with the paint coverage and with the filling of the voids. We also had it
tinted to match the paint and were able to cover with one coat then.

Just use a pva/water mix to seal the blocks first. This will fill most of those holes and also seal the block preventing dust. Once dry you can paint over it. Much cheaper than buying block filler and using several coats of paint. Another option is wallpaper paste instead of the PVA.

I'm always surprised by guys who carefully paint their floor with nice epoxy -- and then leave their benches, shelves, cabinets and walls as unpainted pine or OSB.

It doesn't take that much time to put some paint on it -- and then your work is protected.

And it looks good, to boot.

Well, this ship has sailed. I already have two or three coats on the block, and its not the whole garage, just one and a half walls.

It was already primed or painted a very poor quality white when I bought the place.

Regardless, I have added some trim for my work area and am doing a few other things to clean up the look out there.

This is the part that really made a difference. Cleaning up over the garage door and caulking all the voids really makes a difference and makes it feel cleaner.

Here is the block wall I was referring to. I am trying to figure out how to go about putting a nice stripe down the wall. Haven't really gotten it all sorted out yet.

Nice job so far. Hey-if you haven't put on a last coat yet, and you have not bought any paint for it yet- I'd highly recommend Duramax Elastomeric Paint. This stuff is the bomb on any surface having pinholes, gaps, nail holes etc. It is a rubberized paint, goes on thick and flows nicely and covers block very well. The paint dries into a rubber-like skin and it is tuff!

We have used it on T-111 siding on the sheds, and on raised block beds. We are real fans of this stuff: Lowe's Sells it:

Duramax Elastomeric Paint for Masonry etc..
