Laid 2 coats of primer down and 2 coats of semi gloss. I want to trim the bottom with a rubber or vinyl baseboard and the top with something cheap. Any ideas like 3" pine or something?

when I said power drywall sander. I meant electric sanders with a 10" disc and vacuum attachment
I have a pole version & a handheld one
like these. there's literally no dust except when you run off on a corner etc. they are a godsend .

I painted my garage this past week without priming it...i know blasphemy. The drywall was rough construction grade and to get it perfect would require basically redoing the whole garage which was not going to happen. Instead of priming, I chose to get a better grade of paint, Sherwin Williams that was about $40/gallon. The $200 5 gallon bucket did my 3 car garage (and ceiling) with one coat with about a half gallon left over.

mid project:

Painted:

Put back together:

I know it is not perfect, perfect was not financially feasable. I ma just posting this so people realize that consider what your goals are.

There was no bleeding.

Can't say I have ever put a single coat of paint on anything with good results.

Painting bare drywall is not just lazy....its a waste of money. The drywall paper soaks up paint like crazy. Part of the rationale for primer (especially PVA primer made for drywall) is that its very cheap (compared to paint) and helps to seal the paper. That way your paint stays on top, where it actually does some good, instead of just soaking in.

And yet, I had good results. YMMV.

Painting is truly 80 percent preperation and 20 percent finish. Most people dont want to put forth all the labor to make drywall or for that matter a car body look good. I always hear it's too much work. Making your work shop a sharp looking space where you like spending time just naturally will make your projects better looking.
Rt jam I think it came out great, looks really good.
I think maybe a 1x2 instead of a 1x3 it will not look so bulky jmho, Jim[emoji106]

In ground contact I wouldn't use plain wood... around here that's a good way to get wood destroying insects up into the drywall and studs.
I think the rubber curbs go on fast and look decent. I'm thinking about trying to find 1/2x3 PVC or something like that.

Funny, every forum has "rules" that just cannot be broken, at my ski site it is mounting your own skis and not getting the bindings ASTM tested so they will release at the correct amount of force. Here it is you MUST use a primer.

I agree with what you are saying. Some of us are old crusty farts that grew up with lead based paint and graduated high scool before microwave ovens were sold to homeowners. We just know in our mind that it is going to look like **** if we dont primer first. I have tried the new primer and paint in one and I am still on the fence but I'm trying. I hope you can continue to tolerate our out dated mind set, thanks.
Can someone pass the metamucil: spit

Yup. Just because there is a "correct" way to do something, it does not mean every other way is wrong.
In my case, knowing that there was no way it would be perfect (it is still a garage) because of the rought drywall, I rolled the dice with this process and I am could not be happier. The RIO is better than I expected.

Not sure if everyone saw reply #25. I did not skip the primer step.
We mud the walls, sand, mud, sand, mud and sand.

Then 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of semi gloss paint. Some places 3.
Did a 1/2 x 3 crown moulding and 3" rubber baseboard.

The ceiling only got primer and paint. Not mudding and sanding overhead.

It's just a garage. Not a man cave or interior of a house. The goal was inslulation and shiney walls to reflect light and didn't want dirty hand prints soaking into bare drywall.

What's above the garage? I thought tape and mud was part of the fire blocking required by code? (Unless it's a detached garage)

I was spurred on by finding 2 full gallon cans of Zinzer, and a $30 5gal. oopsie at Lowe's of a beige eggshell. Onto the other side now. 3ae4af45dc6be128dcaaa62c08fe439b.jpgab05184a658b4477a7c92d0e0106f625.jpg3b1185f9415d9982a56612887c1c924c.jpgd0b6a79dd4fe03fa68dde7fcb5d4c6ab.jpg

NO gloss, NO semi gloss. First coat 1/2 primer and 1/2 paint mix. Second coat all paint. Use eggshell or satin. Both are easy clean up.
