Any suggestions on how to clean, prime, paint this type of metal? About 100 sq. feet. I would like to do job with something less than $285. a gallon paint.

Use an etching primer - like DuPont Variprime. Consult your local autobody supply joint - they will hook you up. It's about $180 for 1.5 gallon 'kit' - it uses a phosphoric acid reducer and it is a chromium primer. Excellent stuff. It is very tolerant to less than perfectly clean substrates, too.

What are you painting? I just did the ceiling in my garage (galvanized decking) and did not use ridiculously expensive materials. Of course, this is a low stress environment...no water, sun, temperature, mechanical abuse, 13 feet in the air so it can be a little ugly and nobody would notice...etc. If I was painting, say, a galvanized roof or rain gutter...then I'd want the best finish and the paint to adhere real good.

Last time I did galv. gutters I just wiped them down with vineger and painted with latex. The paint was still good when the gutters rusted out and had to be replaced.

Like Bear says...use vineger. I've been in the tower business for 25 years and have pickled many a galvanized tower before painting them (at least before strobes made tower painting obsolete).

Davey4000, and the other guy that said to use vineger to pickle the galvanized are giving you the gospel truth on the matter. I too have done the same. In my case, I painted a galvanized chain link fence this way. The paint stuck like glue to that fence. I painted regular oilbase enamel metal paint like Rust-oleum. If I were going to paint an old windmill I would not even consider using anything other than vineger to do the job!
