All,

I am looking to paint approx 40 36" x 8' sheets front and back of corrugated galvanized panel. Can anyone recommend the best way to prep it, and a top coat.

I have read from vinegar to and etching primer, looking for anyone with experience. I want the fence to look like the photo below.

Product called Ospho for the prep. I would think a moisture cure urethane paint would be the best paint for your application.

What's your location/enviroment and is the fence in the open or shaded by trees/structures.

I am located in Los Angeles, CA. Fence is usually in the sun and we are close to the ocean about 1/2 mile or so.

Firebrick43, thank you for the reply.

There are several 'paint-like' products that are used for roof coatings on rusty tin. Try calling some of your local metal roofing suppliers/contractors.
If you www search for 'metal roofing magazines' you will find many and they will, undoubtedly, have advertising for same.

Tin will be brand new, and not have any rust on it. If it does i will reject it on delivery, all material will be brand new. I have looked at some of those companies and called a few, but usually it is painting over existing not prepping brand new material.

dirtrunner, Have you already purchased the sheets?

You can order them prepainted if you haven't... and the factory coating comes with a 50 year guarantee. You might have to paint the back side (it will probably be polar white, most companies rolling roofing and siding order their coils with a white back)

Here is a link; looks like they have your color.

If you don't do a pre coated panel I would definitely do a moisture cured urethane for your location. Sherwin Williams Corothane HS is one we use at work and I have used at home. If you work for a big company they will give you the corporate pricing to employees here at my sherwin Williams.

Sorry that you live in LA. Lived in Menifee for five years, thank god I got out of there without losing my sanity. Do miss the surfing occasionally however but not the people or traffic

Sherwin WIlliams Macropoxy 646, two coats.
Sherwin Willian Acrylon 218HS topcoat- can tint to any color. (This is a urethane

These should be 25++ year coatings, easy. Both are two part systems.

Edit: see firebrick also recommended SW. WIll be available ONLY at their 'industrial coatings' stores, not 'any old SW store'

Thanks for the ideas, i finally got a hold of a salesperson at MBCI after two days. For those who are wondering, their signature 200 series color is about $1.16/SF 26G, and there higher end colors are $1.39/SF 26G.

Try these guys if you want comparison prices....MBCI is the 800 lb gorilla of the metal building component industry... these are all smaller companies; Metal Roofing California actually caters to homeowners and small contractors.

I would tell the wife to find a color she likes or shes going to be the one painting it when it fades and peals.

Galvalume would also be my choice over a galvanized panel; regardless of the choice to go roll coat pre finish or post coat.

You will regret the decision to post-coat.

MBCi is a good suggestion. Firestone also offers roll formed corrugated panels.

As pudget said, local contractors that have roll formers are going to be more receptive to talking to you then the bigger manufactures. Probably be better value as well because they will just buy coil and run it locally. Save you on freight.

I would go a min of 24 ga for that span, if not 22 ga.

Your basically erecting an equipment screen in your back yard. Lots of architectural metal options for this application.

Some manufactures may be willing to offer you span data for the panels.

I'm assuming your trying to single span these panels? A 4' span is about the max out of a 24 ga panel. Your coastal so I don't think anyone would approve a span that far, but maybe.

You may find yourself running a metal stud infill and installing this on both sides to get the span-ability you want.

Still have not decided on a color, we are going to stain some wood that the house will have on it and compare it to the colors we are looking at. Hoping we do not go the painted route.

+1 My understanding is that galvanized metal does not paint easily, and treatments that are used for bare steel paint will fail miserably on galvanizing.

For my purposes, I would not attempt to cover galvanized with anything other than cold galvanizing. But from what I've read here, OXIDIZED galvanized can be painted with latex paint. Fresh shiny galvanized surfaces should not be painted.

It's preferable to let the galvanize weather before painting, but not necessary if prepped properly, and the correct primer is used.

In Illinois Iowa And Wisconsin the local FS Co-Ops have a product called soy zinc specifically for grain bins it's expensive but is a pretty good product but for it to fully dry takes some time a few months and is the finished color your looking for!
