I got some primer (from my local hardware store) that is specifically made for painting galvanized steel. I wiped down the metal with solvent, then I put 2 coats of the primer on then topcoated with 2 coats of oil based brown rustoleum. The stuff I painted is outdoors 24/7 and so far it's doing fine. It's only been a year or so since I painted it but there's no sign of peeling yet.

If you're grinding or sanding off any of the galvanizing, primer it with self-etching zinc primer. Other than that, prime and paint. Rustoleum is an easy way to get a pretty nice finished product.

a professional painter friend of mine brought me over some paint called DOM (direct over metal) from i believe sherman williams(but I'd say all better paint stores will have similar products).

he said it is what they use to refab warehouses and factories and he has never had to return to fix a paintjob. I haven't used it yet(summer project), but man is this stuff thick!!!

you must use proper primer designed for galvanized metal. regular primer WILL NOT adhire properly. once the primer is dry, paint like you normally would.

is there a name or something for the primer or do I just tell the guy at the home store what I am doing?

I wipe it down with 50/50 water and white vinegar and then just paint it, never failed me yet.
