Hi all,

So I have a mirror in a bathroom that is held on with gold trim (circa 1993).
Not ready to the pull the entire mirror but the wife hates the gold, so I mentioned painting it a satin nickel color. So what do you all recommend for a paint?

Are you going to mask and spray? Or are you looking to brush it on?

You'll still see the gold in the reflected area from the backside. I'd recommend a wider piece of aluminum double sided taped to it if you don't want to take it down.

can do either - mask and spray (meaning rattle can) or brush on....
Not too worried about the back side - it looks almost black.

Might be possible to get rid of the gold color if it's not plated. I was researching doing the same for my shower door. Using brasso, if I can recall

For spray - maybe get a can of DupliColor or similar auto spray. Lots of color choices, decent quality paint, and remember- in painting the end product/result is totally dependent on the prep job.

you need to rough up that metal and clean before you paint. Before you do that run masking tape on the mirror above the trim and along the top of the cultured marble vanity along the bottom of the trim to protect these areas before sanding. I would try a gray scratch pad or 400 - 600 grit sandpaper. Clean, wipe down with prep-all (prepaint wax and grease remover) followed by alcohol. Use the blue shop paper towels low lint. Dry and paint... A quality rattle can will work fine. Lowes and Home Depot have colors liikebrubbed bronze etc.

they make an "etchant" for metals that stained glass crafters wipe on, let it sit a few, wipe it off and it is instant "patina" - might work for you, check michaels, hobby lobby, or stained glass shop.

Is there a trim piece at the top or any other holders for the mirror? If not, then the mirror is probably glued on and the trim just attached with silicone. I would get a knife under it and try and remove it. If you don't like how it looks with out it, then paint it or replace it.
We updated all the trim and fixtures in our house about 3 yrs ago. The only thing that we didn't paint was the door knobs. Hings, light fixtures, Took down the ceiling fans and disassembled and painted the metal with Rattle Can Rustoleum. Took longer, but Saved a ton of money.

in time gold will be in vogue again. Just be patient and it will be popular then sell if you still hate it. If you add some polished brass items here and there in the house now it won't be as noticeable.
