OK, so I have a bunch of the HF 13 drawer base cabinets and the side drawers as well. Great box for the money. Unfortunatly as you all know, HF changed them last year and they are all now gloss red. I have the textured version. I need (OK, want) some more but cant find the old versions. Does anyone know of the correct paint so that I can make new units match the old.

Cheers

I say go for hidden choice 'C' and paint all of the cabinets a different color. Either of the reds they came in aren't great. I painted mine blue and they look much better than when new.

Oh my god, you guys are killing me. I am notoriously lazy and just cant come to terms with sanding and prepping all those boxes.. I was kind of hoping that there was a hammered finish that could go over the new smooth finish. Actually, I quite like the old finish.

Well, yeah, you might find a hammer finish that's close to the old color, but you're still going to have to rough up that gloss surface to get the paint to adhere correctly. You don't want any oils or silicones on that surface, either.

that's a lot of surface to sand down by hand... plus, it might be hard to get into some of the crevices. i recommend sand blasting instead and if you're going to paint, you'll need a spray gun so should already have air tools...

For the cost of blasting, paint and supplies wouldn't it be cheaper to just sell the old one for,$150 bucks and buy a new one?
You are going to spend money either way, so go easy on your self!

assuming you get the new box at coupon price of $350. minus the $150 from selling the old, you think paint supplies are going to add up to $200?? how?

A red scotchbrite pad and a good degreaser should make short work of prep. No need to get all crazy with the prep. Scotchbrite will provide plenty of tooth for any paint and easy to get in the tight spots. (Where are those on a tool box?)

Assuming you might consider going to shiney, the Rustoleum Signal Red is a close match, and using that you just do a quick DA sanding job on the flat surfaces and hand sand the rest. Don't go crazy, the Rustoleum will smooth out nicely.

Who needs surface prep? It is a tool box, not a Caddy. I wiped mine down with mineral spirits and proceeded to paint it with an industrial enamel. I did disassemble the box, but that is about as intensive as that evolution got.

I'd take a drawer to an Automotive Paint Supply Store - they can scan it and mix up matching paint. Red's in automotive parts are relatively expensive... but worth it if you get the paint you want.

The only way I know to match new with old (wrinkle finish) is to buy some rattle cans of wrinkle paint, it usta be popular on valve covers and came in black. I found it in red on Summits site, dont know if it is the right red though.

Personally I would repaint the old to look like the new. The shinny finish will clean up much easier. How many do you have to do?
Wipe down with a wax/grease remover or thinner. As others have said a scotch brite will work for the prep or run a da over it and go.
Don't sand blast...:shocking: it is thin metal and does not require that kind of prep.

That's as hack as leaving bolts out because you can't reach them.

Or it just means your ok with "good enough" which I never have been.

If you are truthful in that statement, then you would just live with the new and old ones not matching

I wasn't smack talking about your post specifically . I just figured the cost of blasting, paint, primer, sandpaper, thinner, a spray gun, rags, gloves, respirator, and on and on....could add up. I missed the part where he had more than one old style. I thought he only had one box he was trying to match up.

Good comments thatnks guys. I really do like the look of the old finish better than the new, dont know why.. I have 5 of the 13 drawers, 3 of the 5??drawer side and 2 of the tall side lockers. I suppose I could sell what I have and go new but thats alot of cash down the drain when I really like the old ones. I was hoping that there was an easy way to duplicate the old finish. Guess I will keep looking

I don't want to hi-jack the OP thread, but just wondering if anyone has repainted the new gloss red HF boxes with a gloss black finish? If so, what steps did you follow and to what extent did you paint the drawer interiors?

That's an easy one. Just like you'd paint any other gloss surface. Red Scotchbrite pad, scuff it up, wipe with degreaser, rattle can with paint of choice or use proper paint gear if so equipped. . .judging by your question, rattle can is more likely. Throw a clear over it if you want to get real *****.

If I was serious about a color change, I'd pull all the slides, strip the box and drawers of all hardware, then prep and paint.

Just hit it with the Summit Wrinkle Red. Use a heat gun to dry it and it will look OEM.

Aha, this is what I was looking for. Thanks much. For those that wanted to see it, here is the front.

The rolling tool cart which now has 2 of the tall side lockers on 1 end (no pict right now but I will get one. The 5th base is just a mobile unit that I push wherever there is space

I want to get a few more as I love them as cabinets for not only tools but hardware, parts and supplies. No room in this garage but I am moving back to Wisconsin and will then have a proper garage.

I have an old wrinkle finish that I'd trade for a new gloss. (that way when I buy my next cabinet it'll match) I bought it just before the change to the new style. I'm in N. AL

Not a HF box but I did a repaint on my Cman box. I used some Herculiner roll on bed liner on the inside of my drawers. It was alot easier than trying to sand and paint.
