Painting in the Basement

Hi everyone. I'm fairly new here as in i haven't posted up before but I have a question and don't know who better to ask but you guys. My wife complains when I spray paint in the basement so I was thinking about installing some sort of vapor barrier to the bottom of the floor joists. Is this a good idea or do you have any other suggestions. Eventually Id like to finish the shop with sheet rock but I don't know if it would keep fumes out either. I'd also like to do some small welding projects down there and I can see that being an issue also. Thanks GJ and if its been answered before maybe someone can just point me towards the right thread.

:dunno:

Does your basement have a window or an exterior door? I hope it does. If so, you should open up for ventilation. Maybe use a box fan to help move the air. Realize of course that if you fill up a small space with spray paint fumes you can cause an explosion or kill yourself with the solvent vapors. Huffing isn't a smart way to get high .

Thanks for the suggestion and yes I have thought about a box fan. My basement shop is not terribly small it's actually in an L shape and each section is about 32 feet long and 16 feet wide there is an 8' x 8' garage door A walk thru door and a window.

I've had the same issue and tried to seal off the work area with poly but no luck. If you decide to use a fan, be sure that you are protected from explosion. Another way is to blow fresh air into the space and have a decent size opening for the fumes to escape. Depending what you are painting, the off gassing can be nasty. I currently use a tarp type garage / carport and leave the ends open.

Yea rattle can would be easy to just move outside but welding fumes from when I'm laying on the ground burning in link brackets under my jeep are another story. I guess I need a large fan...

A carbon filter recirculating with a fan can make a huge difference, and might be cheaper than trying to seal the floor.
