Painting OSB

So I am looking at possibly buying a new house and there is an unattached 4 car garage [emoji16]that is finished on the inside with OSB. If I end up buying this house I’d like to possibly paint and make it look nicer/brighter. Anyone have any advice or a product they suggest to coat USB?

I used drywall mud to smooth it out and the Kilz before 2 coats of cheap dollar store gloss white

I used a decent primer, then two coats of gloss white floor paint from Menard's.

Its a bit of a pain to paint bare osb, never heard Catadj78 idea which makes sense.
I have 2 coats of white primer on my osb and cmu blocks which is white enough for me.
I tried glossy white paint and it is to much in my face for me.

I did 2 coats kilz oil base primer
1 coat lowes latex outdoor paint
I had to do 2 coats of primer to cover all the black ink
Boards came from Home Depot
You probably won’t need but 1 coat of primer
It all depends on how nice you want it to look

When we did my 24 x 48 shop, we used a Wagner power roller and did 4 “laps” around the interior. First two were primer and last two were semigloss white paint. Took pretty much a whole Sunday.

Thanks guys! Looks good. I don’t need perfect as I plan to most likely hang up stuff here and there on the walls (banners and such).

In my garage I painted the ceiling white, and used a clear coat intended for log homes on the walls. I'm pleased with the results, and think it looks much better than painting the whole thing white, and less work to boot.

I put 2 coats of the cheapest 5 gal latex white home depot had. It covered fine using a deep knap roller. I did do mine outside before hanging it. Did the ceilings and walls. It's good enough for a garage.

Agreed - key item.

I hate OSB so much I won't install it anywhere. Poor structural value, doesn't hold fasteners as well as plywood, and can't take PNW moisture.

Typically. Kiltz to kill the bleed through and seal the surface, then top coats. After I priced all that for the 24x40 I said "gee, I sure like the warm color of wood".

Ok, thanks. I have a few sheets up and it already looks better but will probably paint it. Just have so much **** to move to paint and don't want to do it in stages. Renting a POD for $400 for 1 month killed that idea. Awful delivery and pick up fees.

Good residential interior paint with primer. Takes 2 coats. We used OSB in our shop / shop kitchen. I chose OSB because it's semi-structural and I want to be able to remove 4x8 panels at some time in the future.

latex over oil primer is fine. the primer is flat so it has a rough texture latex will bond
i would use oil primer as latex can raise grain and make it fuzzy .

Best to use an oil based primer for sure. Some OSB will start coming apart when painted with water based paints. I've got some pics of this happening if I can find them.

I used two coats of oil based kilz. It took about 7.5 gallons for a 25x25. Use the oil because I heard the latex can pop the edge grains since it is water based.

I used caulking to seal up the seams and screws a bit before the primer and then finished it with two coats of quality exterior latex. It looks better than I thought and functions great.

Helped a friend paint the OSB interior of his garage. We used Kilz stain blocking primer first, then two coats of white gloss enamel paint. Still holding up after 12 years, even where the chop saw blasts the wall with sparks (it is dirty there)

I did OSB with cheap interior latex 1.5 coats. I painted it then went back over some areas again. Oil base might be a better way to go as I did get some blistering. I just took a knife and cut off any bubbles and put more paint on it.
No idea how many gallons, but it was easy and looks good.

You can rent a uhaul truck for $20-40 a day and there are no fees. Might be a decent option if you don't need it for too long

Mine's mostly osb. sprayed primer and 1 or 2 coats of latex. backrolling helps sometimes.

I caulked seams after but I was fairly **** about gap spacing and such

I also placed the rougher textUre out into the room. It’ll never be smooth like drywall so why even try. The texture looks intentional.

I would not put any tools in it other than ladders and lawn care (non-powered) items. I have a lot of things in Rubbermaid totes and 4 bikes always in the way. I would have a truck parked in front of it to avoid theft.

I have only put up about half of the insulation and 3 or 4 sheets of OSB, still have a long way to go. Moving things around or tripping over them is slowing me down.
