I have an old barstool with the chrome footrest ring that I want to paint black. What's the proper way to paint it since it will be a "well used" area of the chair.

Thanks.

Bonding to chrome is tough. You will need to get it dull by blasting, etching or sanding. Frankly, I'd powder coat the ring. An epoxy paint might work well.

I like to keep some XIM Bonder in the shop. This stuff sticks to glass, brass, stainless and I'm sure prepped chrome.
It's sold in spray cans and since it dries in seconds, it's really hard to brush on. So think about spraying a couple light coats.

Thanks for the info. Decided to just polish the ring with some steel wool and leave it chrome. Need to reassemble the stool with its new paint job and post it up later today. I think some of you may like it:thumbup:

Hey Milt, thanks for the link re: XIM Bonder. I'm restoring a '56 Feathercraft aluminum boat. Want to paint the inside, but was curious if anything would stick to Aluminum. I'm polishing the outside to look like chrome.

Suppose this stuff is available in rattle cans locally or only on their website?

be very very careful sanding etching or blasting chrome. Its very very toxic if inhaled.
?? where do you guys come up with this stuff? If you inhale the fine mist of metal, it's going to hurt no matter what it is. I've sandblasted lots and lots and lots of chromed items for paint for over 45 years. I wear a mask and safety glasses/hood. You would be foolish not to. It is not any more toxic than anything else. In raw chemical form yes very toxic...
