The cheapie Cutler Hammer panel in my new house is looking kinda shabby against my freshly patched and painted garage walls. I am reading that it isn't against code to paint the cover, but is there any reason why I shouldn't paint the cover?

If you do a crappy brush job it will look like chit. Just my opinion but the now obsolete ITE load centers had the cleanest trim but if someone brushes latex paint on any panel front, it looks like a housewife did the paint job, there is no code restriction on painting the front but any info inside the door should not painted over. If done well it can look pretty good....

Remove the panel cover and rattle can it...
This is what I'm thinking. Like Norcal says, I think it would look crappy if I hit it with a latex brush job.

I'm just doing a reality check. There are enough things that were done wrong with this house. I don't need to add to them while I fix others. :)

You could try painting your panel door with a roller if you want texture to match the walls. I did this with my steel door between the house and garage. It was a nice new door, just the wrong color. Painting it with a roller made it look less "industrial" looking on the house side.

Re-paint the room ANSI 61 Gray to match the panel. Never had any issues with painting a panel cover. Usually, take it off before painting.

It could be against local codes to paint that panel. Best check!

If that were the case in whatever community had that regulation, there needs to be lawsuits against those who used rectal thermometers & caused all that brain damage that led to such a stupid requirement.
