Hey guys i want to prime and paint the walls in my garage, i am wondering am i able to use a HVLP paint gun to spray house hold paint? Thinking if it would work i could get a cheap gun from princess auto with a big nozzle and make things quicker and easier.

Short answer no. You would need an airless sprayer. I’ve diluted to spray hvlp and it’s too thin. I actually have an airless sprayer and I just rolled inside of garage and brushed outside. Quality of finish imo is why I chose those.

By the time you do all the masking to spray you could roll the walls. I’m assuming you are talking about a typical two car garage attached to the house. Now if you are looking at a couple of thousand square feet that would be different.

HVLP would **** at spraying latex on walls.

Many years ago I did that at my parent's house and it took forever and the paint film was so thin because I had to reduce the paint way too much.

In hindsight, I would have just rolled it.

It should not take more than a day to paint your ceiling and walls with a roller doing 2 coats.

Depending on how big it is I’d buy or rent an airless paint sprayer... I own a graco x7 pro and a cordless TC pro.. love them, they paint so quickly that it’s worth the time spent masking. Takes a little to learn how to spray properly and get the right spray tip sizes, but I’ll never roll again unless I have to for overspray reasons

My new neighbours went to the local GENERAL paint store. They bought everything that was on the discount and wrong colour sale table and rented an airless paint pump. The paint was mixed in five gallon buckets then sprayed onto the pealing paint of the house and garage. They painted the windows, doors, downspouts, bushes and chimney. The paint extended over onto the roofing.
They were careful to cover my truck with a tarpaulin. I am thankful for that detail.
Two years later, the majority of the paint has fallen off.
