I painted the surface of what I put in a closet to match the rest of the wall. I kind of tried to paint the slates, but decided I did not want to work that hard. It was a pain in the a$$ to get the paint in the slat and the unfinished wood did not take paint very well. If you have any scrap, you might want to try it on that before you commit to the installed stuff.

I spray paint the slat wall in my shop. Pretty easy.

Install the strips, they come in just about any color and don't dare paint instead of using the strips.

Just be mindful if you got with the strips that you need at least an inch or two from the panel end to slide them in.
