Painting storage cabinets

I just built this wooden surround for my metal base cabinet and the card file cabinet on top. I’m undecided on what to do in finishing to pull it all together. Should I paint the wood and metal same color or the cabinets one color and stain the wood?

Looks good. Personally, I'd stain the wood but it's all up to your personal preference.

Maybe stain the wood a weathered gray? Then it would blend but still look like wood.

I like the gray wash idea too. My wife has been doing a lot of projects where she uses a regular latex paint, brushes it on, then wipes it off with a rag. Try a scrap piece of wood and see what you think. If you used a machinery gray spray paint on the metal then a wash on the rest, if you don't like the wash you can always paint it solid after.

It really is a very nice looking cabinet what ever you do.

I would stain it but it depends on what else you will have in the garage to match. BTW nice job on the surround!

I would paint it- make it look like one piece- the color??? If you have tool boxes/carts/cabinets and/or the machinery is all one color- maybe that color. Or maybe give it that Craftsman look- the cabinet "red" and the drawers/doors charcoal/blk.

If I stained it I'd probably go overboard and make it look like a piece of furniture- then I'd probably use "very colorful" language the first time it gets nicked, dented, or otherwise damaged! With paint, it's an easy dab repair.

I had the exact thought. However, I didn’t build the surround that nice, just basic joints and trim. I’m thinking I might just do the stain first, see how I like it. Could always paint over it later!

If I were to stain it, I'd want some type of finish on top of it so it could be cleaned up in the future. Generally, that's the nice thing about painting it, a coat or two it's done.


Either way, paint or stain, I think it'll look nice.

That shade of green is different. How did you come up with it ?

Any finish on the wood other than the stain ?

Easy...my 6yr old picked it out [emoji16]. Only stain, no clear. I figured it’s I’m gonna get beat up anyways, so no need for anything more.
