Painting unfinished drywall?

New on board and looking to finish 2 car garage in upcoming move. Will be new construction 20x19 garage. Leaning toward Racedeck for floors but have a question on paint.

Im looking at painting over "taped" finish builder provides for garage. Ive seen numerous threads on paint, but cant seem to figure best option. Do I go with interior vs exterior, just primer, primer than paint, satin/flat etc...

I dont need the garage to be finished like interior walls. Figured paint over taped finish will look better than leaving unfinished. I plan on having alot of shelving units, bikes, ladders etc hanging off walls.......I shouldnt have much exposed wall after I squeeze everything I need to in there.

I wouldn't paint unless I was going to finish the drywall. It wont look good. It isn't hard to sand and finish and wouldn't take that long. If you want extra outlets you need to get the builder to put those in before he puts up the drywall, insulation also.

I would just use a few coats of flat white primer, don't bother adding a coat of paint if you're just hanging stuff and not finishing the seams.

Ask the builder for a price for finishing and painting the garage when they do the rest of the house. Might not add that much to the cost and would save you a lot of time. Their subs should be able to knock out a 20 x 19 room in no time.

I would just finish it, then drywall primer and anything but flat paint. Consider it your first garage project. Flat paint and primer gets marked up too easily and looks like **** after a short period of time. Not finishing the drywall joints looks even worse. I don't see the point of not doing this one right since you are just getting there. Plus, Racedeck floor and unfinished walls doesn't compute.

Thx for the insights, will wait and see how the taped finish looks and go from there, $1K from builder to finish is too much for us, will see if I can get better local pricing or try the DIY way...

I agree with others. Finish the joints, which is really easy, and do a prime and paint job. Anything worth doing is worth doing right.

And use a semigloss for best wipe off and clean up later on.

Finish it yourself. Between mud and tools your looking at maybe a little over a hundred and a couple weekends at worst. If you paint it now it'll look like **** and most likely you'll never go back to it. Once you learn how to thin the mud it's not hard at all.

NDNboy, only you know your finance situation, Here comes the "but". You said that the additional cost to "finish" would be $1000.
I say, have the builder, finish, and texturize. Then it is done! Yes it is $1k, but you are going to spend good money on a very nice floor, why not have the walls done to begin with and not have to put up with the mess. And once you hang ladders and stuff on the walls, you won't take that stuff down to finish it later.
