Did a search on this and surprisingly only found one thread with 4 replies and no good answer. I know some of you guys with open truss shops have done it. So how is it holding up? Did you use Latex or oil base paint? suggestions for those people interested in doing it?

Thanks

My reply is assuming the vinyl is rigid and not "soft" rolled on where it flexes...

Think of painting vinyl being the same as trying to get paint to stick to plastic, NOT easy to do as it takes a special primer to bond to it and the primer is the key, in being able to get the top coat paint to stick. .

I bought a primer for some pvc "Fypon" I had ripped in to 16" x 96" flat panels for a exterior porch beam at work that I was installing, to replace rotted plywood. When I asked the Sherwin Williams paint rep to give me a primer that WOULD STICK TO PLASTIC OUTSIDE, he sold me his special primer that would stick to plastic outside. ....

I bought his recommended primer and scuffed the pvc panels with some 240 grit for extra bite, cleaned, primed, and then top coated them with SW exterior latex A100 gloss. ....

That was two years ago and the plastic "wood" panels are mounted on a porch support beam outside year round. They get hit with the full morning UV rays which make the Fypon panels expand and contract, endure temps ranging from - 5 deg. F. to 98 deg. F. annually, and the paint on them is still attached and looking good. So your vinyl being inside out of the weather, would be a breeze for the paint I used. Good luck. jmo.

thanks greg. The insulation is actually the fiberglass rolls that are faced with white vinyl like this

I think if latex would stick to it, it would stay pliable enough to flex slightly from temperature expansion and contraction. I know it will stick good to that PVC trim they make for the exterior.

I see. Last week I painted one inch thick Armaflex on the outside of a huge cooling tower. I used SW 's multipurpose latex primer - white # 6503-57098. Dam stuff stuck like boogers under a kids bed rail. I can bend the Armaflex and the primer still would not flake off. Good stuff and not real pricy... $27.00 thereabouts a gallon. Top coat with any latex.
