Hello All,
I would like some opinions on this issue. I'm ready to paint my garage walls and was going to just grab the interior satin finish in Beige. But since this is a garage should I use something more durable like an exterior enamel or something? What do you think - I thought the exterior paint might give me a chance to wash it down once or twice for the occassional accident.

Just redid my walls and ceiling the other day. White semi-gloss on all. Easy to clean up and any water splashes will not soak in.

I'd want something scrubable and mildew resistant since there will likely be water around. I'll probably use a satin finish kitchen and bath paint when I do my garage.

Go into a real paint store like Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams and see what the light reflectance value is for the paint you're considering. The higher the LRV, the more light is reflected off the walls or ceiling.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the responses. I got two gallons of oil based primer - no need to worry there. I also bought a gallon of Ceiling white for the .... Ceiling (a no brainer no?) I also got an exterior enamel for the walls but could only get a gloss finish (I chose a light beige color). I hope this will be good no? Not too late, won't paint untill this weekend.
I didn't know paint had a LRV, learn something new every day.
Regards,
Rick

I also used white Semi-Gloss Super Acrylic Latex. I believe it's called Super II from Cloverdale. It goes on easy, covers well and is extremely durable. Definately make sure you use a good primer before you paint.

One thing you can do is get the paint store to add a couple of drops of black to the white if you want to tone it down just a little. My opinion is the brighter the walls and ceiling the better though.

the white will make a huge difference in how bright your shop is. I used a cheap white latex that I got in 5 gal pails at the farm store for mine.

Oil Based?-have fun!

Nothing I hate more in house painting than oil based paint. A close second is painting ceilings.

Oil based primer is common these days. The latex's of old never used to bond to it very well but they do now and the Oil based primer really penetrates and seals well. I used oil based primer on my ceiling and walls in my garage. My walls were OSB and it only takes two coats to cover the OSB after the primer.

I agree 100% though. There is little worse than using an oil based paint and even worse is doing a ceiling with it. At least in the garage I could open the overhead and let some air flow thru.

The Super Acrylic Latex I used is expensive but it's good stuff. It hardens quite nicely and it's hard to scratch and chip it. Perfect stuff for garage walls where things are commonly leaned up against walls.

My bottom four feet of the garage wall is concrete block. I had a basement once that has a real shiny very hard paint on it that filled in the pores very well but I do not know what type of paint it was.

It was as hard as a rock, very slick finish (still a bit rough like the block surface) and you could wash it with no problems. It was almost like a ceramic type of coating.

Does anyone know of a paint that is like I describe? I would like to put that on the blocks and do regular paint on the upper walls
Thanks
Daz
