I have just finished up my workbench and I’m considering painting it to match my color theme in the garage. How many of you guys have painted your workbench?

I would see no problem painting the base, just avoid painting the top. I tried it once and the slightest bit of solvent just makes a mess out of everything.

I painted the last roll-a-round workstation I built.
It's much easier to keep clean with some paint on it.

It started out like this. It was trash picked and pretty nasty, the paint was a no brainer. :)

We must shop in the same store for paint... There is a gallon of blue paint ready to brighten up my large wooden workbench; which is intended for woodworking.

Part of this recycled assemblage is already blue, but the trim and back panel lack paint... Thinking of using a Kilz water based primer on the unpainted surfaces. Wondering if an oil based primer would be a better choice?? or use the water based primer and hope for the best... ?

I would use a primer compatible with oil based. I painted my benches with oil based. Tops are not painted, just the frames. My garage is for work, not beauty. But painted makes them much easier to keep clean.

That's one hell of a nice and well built W/B. If you have or intend to have a paint theme in your garage it's something too consider. I did as you can see in the attached pics. Also, consider using 3/16 or 1/4 inch masonite for the top decking. It's durable, cleans easy and can be replaced after is become unsightly. Attach it with 3/4 inch screws around the perimeter and a couple in the middle. My W/B was given to me by my neighbor, so I refinished it.

I say yes, paint the bottom/frame, just not the working surfaces.

Blue, GREAT job refinishing that bench, doesn't even look the same. :) Also, good suggestion on the masonite, I've been thinking of what to put on top of my bench for awhile now.

I should specify that my top is not painted. It is black epoxy chemistry lab counter top. shop3.jpg And my shop is still in the process of moving in in but will be for work and play. Just because it is for work and not play doesn't mean it can't look nice.

I painted the top with garage floor paint. It's holding up well and is easy to renew when I feel like it.

Yep, I just painted mine with some leftover porch & patio paint. Looks nice (glossy), more durable than the usual latex paint, super easy to wipe off. Most importantly, very easy to touch up because I'm not worried about having a perfect finish. If it's a little off, that's ok--it's a garage workbench, not fine furniture.

I also decided to go one step further and cut some vinyl-backed masonite board and screwed it to the top. If that gets messy enough eventually, will just replace. Overboard, yeah sorta.....but this is the garage journal after all. Nothing is overboard around here!

I have a bit of OCD in me (ask my daughters - No, don't. Don't want you lot talking to my daughters.... :lol_hitti).

I painted mine after I built it, with the impetus coming from this very site....

So I couldn't just have a plain old bench, it had to be a titan, and painted in "my" colours.

Here is a picture of it upside down and in undercoat on top of the poor old, long serving, badly bent, and very wobbly bench that it replaced. This was before 2 sheets of 12mm plywood were glued and screwed together for the top, which was poly coated (after staining a light pine-ish colour) with 6 coats to make it nice and hard.

The New Bench 12.jpg

And while I didn't take a finished shot of it, here it is covered in WIP... It's the blue and white thing in the corner.....

Hope this contributes.
