I decided my back wall in the garage was boring white so started painting it red. Looks like i will need at least 3 coats.

This red office I just finished took 3 good coats. Be patient and it will be worth it.

Mine wasn't red, but it is an off red. I used Lowes Valspar paint in a Satin finish and it actually covered very well. Better than I had anticipated.

Try painting over a little girls "Barbie Pink" room ! I should have used a stain blocking primer tinted to the new color.

You've got my sympathy. My original plan for my garage was to have one wall red. Two coats and it was clear that I just hadn't chosen the right red. Covering that stuff back up was more work than painting it in the first place.

Red is a bear. Maybe if you use a tinted primer before painting you can get in 1-2 coats, but my experience has been 2-3 coats for any "deep" color is about normal.

It's just as much fun when you neutralize. My first house had a fire engine red master bedroom, pink kids room and dark green kids room. We couldn't stand the colors so we repainted. The red and pink rooms required 2 coats of Kilz primer, and then 2 coats of a tan color. The dark green (almost black) we did something stupid like 3 coats of Kilz and 2 coats of paint.

A little good tick if you have to paint over a "strong" color, like red, blue, flashy green,...

Cover first with a "grey" colour.
that is more efficient than any other primer or white and it's a neutral color. So after you can paint in white without any problem
Tested and approuved ;)

For colour like red, be sure the temp of the room is not too hot (max is 20°C) so the paint will not dry too fast and you will have time to cross your paint

I feel your pain. I just finished painting an accent wall in one room an olive green color, and I had hell getting it to cover over the white that was there before. I hate painting enough as it is, having to come back and recoat makes me cranky.

Gray primer is the key for dark colors. Sherwin Williams sells 4 different shades and when you select a dark color, they will tell you which primer corresponds. Wish I had known that before I painted my kitchen 7 years ago. 6 Coats and I wasn't completely happy but it is what it is.

We had painted a wall in our bedroom a dark blue and repainted the entire room a medium tan this past weekend. One coat gray primer to hide the blue, one coat of tan for color and we were good to go.

Well almost a year has passed and the garage got so disorganized i had to clean it. While i was at it i finally did the last 2 coats (3 total) on the back wall.

The question now is, do i paint the side walls the same color, or should i go for a beige to match the floor....? Comments always welcome!

Same color :thumbup: That looks to be about the same that I have on my walls.

Kevin that wainscot is awesome!

Dang very close color and now i am eyballing your wainscot!

I went to lowes and got them to match (hold your negativity guys....yes they sucked this year) the Houston Texans battle red color.

Do you feel by painting all the walls the garage feels smaller? I am on the fence with one color all around.

Garage is looking good. Anymore pics or details on the mini?

Yeah its a 1972 Austin Mini that started life over this side of the pond in Canada. It was magazine featured in 2007 by its then owner in Florida. I purchased it in 2013 and after only a couple hundred miles a ball joint went out at 45mph. No body damage but i need to make time to fix the tie rods, bushings, joints, etc. i have it all but time is not on my side. Hell it took almost a year to paint my garage wall hahaha

Also it has a 1380cc engine pushing 115bhp

The day i got it off the delivery truck...

Red is nice looking. But it does make the room/garage darker.

Thats what i thought originally, but it isnt too bad considering the picture taken is with the standard lightling (2 bulbs hanging from the ceiling).

I plan on putting in some T8 lighting when time and money allows.

As some others have mentioned, a top-quality paint can make a HUGE difference.

I used Sherwin Williams to apply the yellow in the upstairs area of my barn, over white primer. I only laid down one coat and, except in certain spots and with very close scrutiny, you would think it was two coats.

But yeah, painting does ****!
