Hello All - I'm a bit a of a silent GJ member but I have been taking notes. I'm just in the process of setting up my shop that was finished about a year ago. I bought up a bunch of old pallet racking and converted them into a workbench. The uprights I bought were 15 feet tall so I cut them off, welded in some more bracing and topped them with 2 layers of 3/4 in plywood. The top being oak. It about 32 feet long and 40" wide. Plenty of room to work on stuff. Put some poly on and this will be my main workbench. This summer I'm going to disassemble the whole thing a paint it red. The inside of the shop is 5/8 OSB painted white and I'll use red and grey for accent colors. I liked the idea of the pallet racks being completely adjustable.
I'm going to remove the lower cross brace in the middle so I can push some roller cabinets under the bench. Similar to what other members have done with HF ( or something silmiliar, we don't have HF in Alaska) 44" boxes. I have room for 2 with room leftover for a smaller roller cart.

It does continue down the far wall. My loft is about 9' to the ceiling and after that the pallet rack goes to the main ceiling 15'.

Pics are in my profile.

It's my work in progress.....

That's a good idea. I bet it's extremely sturdy. You won't have a problem with an anvil or vise on these benches. Impressive!

I built a couple of workbenches and an 8' x 4' layout table using rivet lock pallet rack pieces cut to 36 inch height. It's a great, strong table. Only drawback is that the deep depth of the framing pieces makes it nearly impossible to mount many things such as vises that clamp onto the bench. I really missed not being able to undermount a woodworking vise. Other than that, they are great.

Nice bench. With storage!

Is it oak veneered plywood? One can make a very tough, long-lasting top with garden variety tongue and groove unfinished 3/4" thick solid flooring. Have to put in some work to nail it, trim the edges, sand and finish etc.

I would place any vises intended for serious beating next to the support.
