I was wandering through Lowes tonight and in the garage section they had some stuff that looked like scaled down pallet racking for building garage shelves out of. It looked really sturdy, and had lots of different sizes to custom build about anything you want. The price didn't seem too bad either. Has anyone used it? You can make up to 72" wide by 30" deep shelves out of it.

I've seen what you're talking about, or similar. We got it from Lowes too. If you decide to get some, be sure to get all you want at once. We got one set that was pretty nice, so we went back a few days later to get some more and it was marketed as the same stuff but of considerably lesser quality. I think the boxes were even the same, but I don't recall exactly.

try to find some real used pallet racking. That stuff at Lowe's is Ok but you might be able to find some used stuff for the same price but a lot heavier and stronger.

Re: Pallet racking type shelving at Lowes

This stuff wasn't boxed. It was just in the shelves, all the separate pieces to pick and choose what you want. It is all black finish and seemed really pretty sturdy.

I know what pallet racking costs as I have been involved with purchasing a good deal of it at work. This stuff is significantly cheaper. Sometimes stuff crops up on craigslist, but most industrial stuff is really too big for most garages.

Sounds just as bad or worse. If it's not a "standard" design of pallet racking you'll likely never be able to find more later. Hoping that Lowes carries it for any length of time is a huge gamble.

In your purchasing for work were you buying new? New pallet racking is spendy, but most large cities are gonna have places that do nothing but specialize in used material handling. If you don't the next city over probably does, and I'd bet prices on used are less than the stuff at Lowe's.

You can get industrial racking 30" deep, and uprights will probably be 12 or 14' high. That's perfect, cut it down to 6 or 7' and one upright = two for you. Take a cordless sawzall or maybe portaband and cut it on site. Get some 8' stringers and you can still haul it all home in a short bed pickup w little trouble.

The Lowe's near me has it too, and I'm tempted. I'll probably pick some up soon. It's quite heavy-duty, made in USA IIRC, and they've been carrying it for a while (seems unlikely that it's going to "disappear" overnight if I need to purchase an additional shelf).

Used pallet racking around here goes for about 80-85 cents on the dollar of new. There are companies that specialize in it and they buy up everything at auction, craigslist, etc that they can find.

I got a paper on it. I will have to see if I can find it out in the car later.

If the steel is like a wrinkle finish black then I've seen the same too, for a while.
I believe the shelves are particle board

It is called Muscle Rack. Yes it is black with the wrinkle finish. Yeah, the shelves they offer are particle board, but I would most likely go with the wire deck that they offer.

I got a 6' tall/6' wide unit at menards for $40 on clearance. Pretty hefty unit, but the wire mesh it came with leaves something to desire. I planned to use some ply when I start getting moved in to the shop completely but for now it works ok with the wire.

Sounds like the shelves I bought from Lowe's. Except mine came in a box. When I put it together it is about 6' tall, 6' wide, and 30" deep with 3 particle board shelves. I have had mine over a year with allot of heavy car parts on it without a problem.

I've been thinking the same thing, but actually using the industrial shelving, just cutting it down to size for my garage and work bench needs.

We have that pallet racking at our Lowes too, I wouldn't buy it. I don't think it's as strong as the used stuff you can pick up for cheaper. That said, I've been looking since July for some used stuff. Got lucky a few years ago there was a Home Depot going out of business in NH, got a whole row of orange HD pallet racks for my old mans barn. Got some of their lighter duty tan racking as well, still have a lot of tan cross beams left, looking for the uprights to build more and put into my garage.

You will have to replace the particle board at some point. At least I did. Otherwise they work good for me.

I bought a rack from Costco that looks to be the same stuff that Lowes sells. I also seen the boxed rack in Lowes. I am happy with the stuff I got. It has wire racks, Which I also saw in Lowes but I could not find the cross braces that hold the side rails from spreading and go under the shelves.

Instad of plywood how about putting over some heavier wire mesh to reinforce the weak stuff? That is probably just some cheap stuff from over seas (obviously), but wire mesh does hold some advantage ove plywood here. For instance, wire mesh can be see through, this way you can see whats up on the shelf without getting the ladder.

Maybe like a 2 x 2 wire mesh piece per shelf?

Try there, they have some decent prices on stuff like this, just a suggestion for you guys buying this stuff.
