Anyone used the pallet racks from Menards? Menards calls them steel component shelving.

Thoughts?

I have a fair amount of it. It's completely fine for what it is. I have a lift table with a FZ600 on it on top of one of my sections. If you compare it to the price of real pallet racking(even used) it's a bargain.

It would be nice if it was available wider than 30". Don't expect to be able to load it like you would real pallet racking.

Added a pic of my FZ and an R1 motor on top of mine.

I've never used the stuff from Menards so I don't have a opinion on it.

However, if you want real pallet racking, either buy once/cry once or keep looking for the deals. Getting it cheap might require some clean up and paint or a road trip to get.

I have 4 sections (8 foot) with two cross shelves on each. It is their "Xtreme" brand stuff. I rate it as very good (9/10) for the average garage. I assembled it by myself, it went together easy with no problems. I cut and painted 1/2" plywood and set between the cross bars so I have solid shelves. The cross bars are shaped for the plywood to set flush with the top of the cross rail. I think I'm $300 into just the shelving. I priced used industrial racking and it was a little more for the same parts plus I would have to cut in down to fit in my garage (10 foot ceiling)

Thanks for all the input!

I won't be putting really heavy stuff on there like one might think of when they think of pallet racks. Heaviest stuff will be gallon and 2.5 gallon jugs of motor oil. I currently have a couple wire rack shelving units and while they have been fine, I have finally just slightly exceeded their weight capacity. So, it's getting to be time to upgrade. Plus, I would like to have solid shelves instead of the wire shelves.

I have used tons of industrial racking that I got cheap or free on Craigslist ,
40 ft each side on the left and right walls of my shop and 8ft tall ,

There are a few styles of racks and you need to make sure they all match , its how they clip together ,
you can also get the uprights at 24-30-36-42-48-60 inches deep ,

There are lots of ideas on Google images

I am not familiar with Menards but if you are in no hurry you can pick some up from Craigslist or OfferUp. As someone already mentioned make sure the beams match the uprights other wise you will never be able to install them. I picked up 2 12 foot uprights that are 24” deep with the beams being 8ft. I can’t remember if I got them for free and just paid the person $15 to hold them for me while I got a truck long enough to transport them or actually paid $15 and had them hold them for one day. Either way it was one hell of a deal even if the uprights were 12 feet. I ended cutting them to 8 feet and am planning on using the remaining pieces to build a rolling workbench.

Menards does not have a presence in the San Diego area. We have the Big Orange Box stores and The Big Blue Box stores. There are always dealers in Previously Owned Pallet racking advertising on Craig's List, occasionally I score some because I am willing to dismantle it and haul it away. With tools and welding rod I have been able to customize the donated racking into something resembling my needs.

Yea I figured we did not have any of those stores down here. Welding is on my “to learn list”. That is why I have not tossed the pieces of uprights I have. I am looking to turn it into a rolling workbench and attach a vise, bench grinder and possibly even a small drill press

I'd say keep an eye on out used industrial pallet racking. There are lots of people on FB and Craigslist selling it around me. That is what I'm using in my shed.

I haven’t found any in my area on Craigslist. I like the looks of the Menards shelving

I have (3) 24"x8'x8' 4 shelf xtreme garage "pallet racking" from menards. Its good stuff. Its not industrial pallet racking but you could put an engine or other heavy object on the shelf with no issues. I wouldn't be putting three or four cast iron v8s' on one shelf however like industrial racking can handle.

Like laser3kw I would rate it 9 out of 10. I to have some wood shelves, scrap 5/8 osb with scrap 2x4 cross memebers every 16 inchs and some 1/8 hardboard ontop of that to make it smooth. 5/8 ply sets flush with the top of the rail.

The wire shelves are meh. They are ok for storage totes and such but smooth wood is better for small items or items your pulling off and on all the time

Thanks for all the input. The last link looks interesting but too far from me. I think I’m going to go with these shelves from Menards

There are typically used pallet racking vendors in every major metro area. Not sure of your area, but a Google search might turn up something closer to you.

go to the Sears store that is closing, and purchase it from them. I got 3- 18inch x 8 foot sections from their tire shop when they closed, Paid 50.00 for all three sections, I had to take them all apart, but they were well worth the money. They had used them as portable tire sales racks.

previous post has a good point. Not just Sears, but any store that is closing often has good deals on shelving. The closer it gets to the place closing and the lease ending (IE, they can't be in the store anymore), the cheaper the stuff gets! My brother has gotten stuff cheap from Bradlees years ago and more recently hit 3 Pet Valu stores that closed up shop in the USA earlier this year(or last year?) and got shelves really cheap! Type of store dictates what kind of shelving they'll have. The pet store had stuff similar in height to the Menards stuff but between the three stores, he got a bunch of different length sections to really help him tailor the shelves to fit his space.
