It's not much........didn't take long to build..........wasn't really that hard either, but the wife wanted it and the wife likes it so it's a WIN FOR ME!!!!

My question is this. The wood is untreated and this table will be outside on the back patio, so what should I use to treat/seal the wood with so it will last? A friend of mine said an old farmer told him this..........mix one quart of used motor oil with 4 quarts diesel fuel and "paint" this mixture on.

Speaking for myself, I wouldnt want to be anywhere near a patio table sealed with diesel and motor oil. Probably works great for a trailer deck.

Lots of food grade sealer options out there. if food grade is desirable, check out sealers for butcherblock.

Instead of diesel use toluene, will keep the bugs away.

Don't ask.
First get some gussets or cross bracing on those legs.
There are plenty of oils that are wood finishes. I wouldn't use diesel or motor oil on a table, but it works on fence posts.

Thanks for all the replies!! Very useful info here!!! Now that I think about it the oil/diesel mix probably wouldn't be good idea considering the end use of the table.

I agree on the cross bracing.. make that a priority so nobody gets hurt.

Also, buy some tweezers, I see lots of splinter pulling in your future

It will only stink and contaminate everything that touches it for a couple years .

Ditto.

Sherwin-Williams has some nice exterior deck stain.

I'd say that exterior deck stain is your best bet. But before you go down this path, I would suggest interpreting the markings on the pallet to see what it was treated with. Domestically produced pallets are usually just kiln dried to kill off any bugs (pallets must be free from insect eggs, as they used to be known to transport invasive beetles and such), but pallets imported from Asia may have been chemically treated like railroad ties. If it is treated, I would not feel comfortable with just stain as a barrier.

Agreed with both. This absolutely needs some sort of cross bracing (in both directions).

I would also suggest putting some rubber or plastic feet on it. Something to get the wood off the patio surface. It'll slow the rot down a lot.

I wouldn't put anything on it. That wood will not rot for a long time, and you probably will through it away in a couple of years.

Dried unfinished oak left out in the weather around here will be spongy and gone after two winters max.

I don't know, the diesel/oil mixture might work great if you're thinking of making a pallet bonfire.

Seriously, some deck stain or wood stain, whatever. Pick a color you like. Depending on the look you can sand it down and just throw some poly on it.

If there's one thing that will survive the elements without protection, it's a damned pallet nobody wants around. As long as that one has been in someone's way growing flowers and spiders for about six years, it should last forever.
