I need some pallets but that look like boxes (don't need a top). I've seen these before but can't remember where. I just need to put old car parts/transmissions/etc. in them and then be able to stack them on shelves.

I have access to regular pallets to make my own but trying to get them apart usually results in destroying most of the pallet. Those things look like they are put together by a thread but man they are tough!

What things are out there? Plastic? Where and what kind of places get these things and want to get rid of them?

I need some of these real badly and own the cheap.....as usual!

I have got a couple like that when i bought GM crate motors. So maybe check around the dealerships and shops in your area. A Briggs and Stratton factory by me has a ton of wire cages kinda like the one in your pic that stack ontop of each other also

You can prob got 2 to 3 high depending on weight. Thats what the huge gaylords we use stack to and they are 1000lb plus and are made of cardboard.

I used to have a couple collapsible ones. They come in handy if you are storing empties from time to time.

I just moved my shop and needed something to pack things in, hoses, fittings in boxes, metal parts, things like that and also cheap. What I found (right behind my shop, neighbor) was the 250 gal. plastic totes with the light tubing framework, took a sawzall and cut the tops off, that made them about 3'tall. Was able to move them with a fork lift and some were filled heavy, around 2500lbs. Took my pallet racks down and moved them set them back up and moved the totes with my truck and trailer three at a time.
they are not stackable but I just adjusted my racks to accomodate what I had. They were free and the co. that I got them from mixes soap and cleaning chemicals, just washed them out before using. Most of these chemical co. use them and when empty they have no use for them and their supplier wont ship them back because they are bulky and cheap.

man, ive got a bunch of crates. if you were local, I would give you some.
the shop next to me imports engine parts from china and they always have them laying around.
maybe look around for a business that ships or receives big products.

I saw a bunch go for 15 a piece at an auction the other day and they were not in all that bad of shape. I use them for a lot of things including some storage and have some 4x4 plywood I can toss on top to make portable tables when needed.
Sometimes its handy to "isolate" projects to their own bench especially if there is a wait.

Around here we call them totes. Used a lot in the cannerys and fruit packing plants. Look a whole lot like what SBerry pictured.

The apple orchard industry uses these to store harvested apples in. They are basically a box built on a standard pallet (42" x 48"?).

They can be had new from any pallet company for about $50 to $60. You can often find them used from orchards going out of business for about $15 each. Also check Craigs list.

They have many names, but apple bin is common here. Talk to an apple grower for sources.

Ah, these are the leads I was looking for.......

Heck, I may need more than I think. I was thinking a temporary storage solution but they could be more useful, long term, than I originally thought.

I'll call some car dealerships, a couple of the apple orchards, the local HVAC place and maybe a few others...

thanks!

FY, give a call to Army/Navy surplus stores in the area. Larger places will have something like what you're looking for.
