panel box catalog ?

I would like to know where to start looking for two small electoral panel boxes. One would be a sub panel in my garage for 1 or 2 220volt breakers and (1) 20 amp breaker for electric outlets for hand tools like a radial arm saw or drill press.

One of the 220 volt outlets will be for power for my dock. It has two lift motors that are 110volt but can be changed to 220 volt operation by changing the wires in the motor peckerheads. I will need a 2nd small panel box on the dock for the lift motors up-down toggles and a 110 dock outlet and lamp

What I'm looking for are not those main house panel boxes at Lowes or Home depot that are big. I want to find a couple of small panel boxes...one for each end of the conduit I'll run to the dock....one on the dock and one inside the garage.

Go to Lowes or HD and look at the small main lug panels. For outdoors, Nema type 3R.

Box stores seem to have a much limited supply for these kinds of boxes. There are many online electrical supply sites, some easier to search than others.

Here's how I go about a search: first I type in the best terms I can think of, then hit 'images'. From there I usually see something that is close to what I need if not the exact thing. All the images have a link to their host and you can hit those until you find a friendly site.

Sq D has catalog numbers with every letter and number having a meaning that is explained in a chart.

If you can find that chart it may help.

Sounds a# if you are looking for a 6 to 12 circuit panels and they probably will have to be rain tight.

Every major manufacturer has their catalogs available online for download. The big box stores only carry a very small subset of what's available - basically they only stock the most profitable items.

The Square D QO product line is very good, but I am beginning to think it is overpriced. Schneider has kept the Homeline product line around as a more "cost effective" solution for residential application.

Eaton (formerly Cutler-Hammer) and Siemens (not sure who the previous owners were) also have a lot of offering at less cost than QO.


And for you pros who SWEAR by QO, the older (1980s?) QO panels will NOT accept the current QO tandem breakers ! Square D does not make the old ones, nor do they list the part number. There are NOS units available if you find the part number !

Pretty sure you just need non-CTL tandems for the older panels and they are still made. A lot more $$ though.
