Hey guys. I was reading a thread in another section on here. The owner ran 2-200amp breaker boxes side by side in his shop. Is there a reason to do that over one 400amp
I need a 400 in my new shop plans and was just curious

I did that at the house. 200A panels are commodity items so much cheaper than the single 400A. And also gives more room for all the circuits. But that was with very short runs to the source which was a meter base on the other side of the wall. If your meter base is close then two 200s seems good. If far away then probably not. Probably also depends on what the local AHJ will allow.

I would do the (2) 200amp panels. Don't know how big your shop is, you could put them on opposite ends for shorter circuit runs. Plus as already said, it would give you more spaces for circuits

Cheaper to use 2-200A panels over a 400A, if you have the need for 400A service.
