Last year we mapped all the circuits in the house and garage, (attached) in preparation for a swap from an electric range to a gas range. I added a new outlet for the range, but decided the garage lights and outlets need to be on a couple of new circuits.

Researching if the main panel could support more breakers, I found that the panel itself may be problem. If this is a Zinsco type panel, I'm leaning toward replacing it entirely, we are already setting money aside for a replacement and I will have an electrician inspect it this Spring.

Does this appear to be a Zinsco type panel? The house was built in 1984.

If it does turn out to be, is it considered to be dangerous enough to require replacement, even if there is no evidence of failure? As in having our homeowners insurance get involved right away.

A proper inspection will of course determine what action we take, just looking to plan ahead.

That panel is junk, I highly recommend replacing it. I have had countless service calls for bad breaker-buss connections in those panels.

Sylvania was Zinsco, GTE bought them in 1973, & renamed them as Sylvania, by 1984 they were obsolete & either were or about to become Challenger, semi-flush panels are a pain to swap out but the ChiCom Zinsco replacement breakers are really costly & the panels are garbage, now is a good time to upgrade.

BTW, what part of the Sacramento Valley are you?

Thank you Norcal, that pretty much confirms the info I've gotten from this forum and InspectAPedia, just wasn't sure that if by 84 any improvements had been made to the panel, and I've also read about the Challenger problems, so I will be having it replaced.

We have lived in the house close to 17 years and I've only needed an electrician once about 13 years ago, so I'll start looking for one right away and get with my insurance guy about it too.

I live in Woodland, and work in Vacaville.

The owner of the inspectapedia website seems to have his own agenda, so I don't pay too much attention to the site, but I hate Zinsco/Sylvania/Challenger gear, but then again dislike SQ D Homoline, Bryant/Westinghouse/Cutler-Hammer/Eaton BR, too. :D Zinsco was used by bottom dwelling, hack electrical contractors, builders just because Zinsco was cheap, which is why you see them in a lot of tract homes and multi-family dwellings built during Zinsco/Sylvania's heyday of the late 1950's, '60's, & '70's.
