Here's what I was basing my question on in the first place:
My load calc on the house panel is 145. I am assuming max load (as recommended by my electrician) on the garage based on the simultaneous usage of the major items. (AC: 20amps, Lift: 21 amps, air compressor: 19-21 amps, + lights, tv, sound system).
I have wired my garage as I posted earlier and taking into account some excellent comments made on this and other boards. But, I had to upgrade the main breaker. I could not do the work from the meter to the main, so I brought an electrician into do the final work. His plan is to place a new main panel outside next to the meter, which the meter feeds. From this new main, he will make the "old" main a sub panel that is fed from the new main. He will also feed the garage sub panel from this new main.
There are a couple of contributing factors to this decision. The old main cannot support any more than 150 amps. Square D does not make replacement breakers for the box, and the busses would not support any more than 200 amps. An additional factor is how the previous owner routed the conduit that goes under the breezeway between the garages, which will feed the subpanel. This plan works with the physical layout of this conduit.
The electrician said that the new main only needed to be 200 amps. (I had been thinking 250, but I'm not an electrician, and no amount of internet reading (including NEC) can make up for experience).
I like the electrician, I want to bounce this plan off of someone, before I commit. Its very expensive.
