Pants From The Old World

Just wanted to share this discovery with you all (though I suspect half of you already know it better than I). I've worn Levi's, Carhartt, Dickies, and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember. I've got nothing bad to say about any of them.

Lately, though, I've been wearing these Jobman work pants from Sweden -- to the exclusion of just about everything else. The arrangement of pockets is really useful for me, especially the built-in nail pockets. The built-in kneepads are also a welcome addition, as I am rarely diligent enough to go ******** the kneepads unless I know I'm going to be spending all day on my knees.

I've got two pairs now, slightly different from one another. And I will undoubtedly have more. These things are awesome. Got some pants from the old world? Let's see them!

Here are the pretty pictures:

And here's a pair of mine, after several days of drywall:

How much do they cost?

On the expensive side. Everything gets expensive when it goes from Euros to Dollars. Also depends on the specific model and the type of fabric on that model. One pair was $85 and another pair was $125.

Jobman is just one of several European work wear brands that are starting to become available in the US. Blacklader is another brand, and there are a few more that escape me at the moment. Anyone on the other side of the pond want to chime in with their favorites?

Long Beach CA, the sewer by the sea.
I used to wear lederhosen w/o the suspenders. Split cowhide about an 1/8th inch thick and doubled up in most places. Get under a car and roll around all you want, you ain't wearing those suckers out. PITA to take a leak though with the double buttons for the front panel.

Yes, I have 2 pairs of the Swedish work pants I brought back from Stockholm the last time I was there. Seems like they were $60 or so 3 years ago? They were good, but I wonder if people elsewhere in the world talk about our dickies double knee work pants at $25 each (which I prefer).

No idea if the rest of Europe is same as us on language use, but that sounds like a joggling package in a pair of Y fronts. :D Now trousers, that's another thing altogether. :D

Haha, indeed, this thread has the. Best. Title. Ever.

Those pants look awesome, but the current exchange rate pricing makes $60 for Carhartt doublefronts look like a deal. If I were still doing really laborious work, I bet they would be fantastic.

I will say that I also brought home a set of German "Blau Anton" worker overalls, but these never really grew on me in terms of comfort. But I will admit I am not really a fan of overalls. I remember they were $20 at the most in the year 2000 or so, but there was a Deutschmark -dollar conversion involved when the dollar was still strong.

Looks like the pants that Bear Grylls wears.

Did a little digging. Looks like the pants he's wearing in that photo are his own Bear Grylls-branded (natch) "survival pants". Because you know -- if you know you're going to need to eat beetles and grubs out in the forest to survive, be sure to wear appropriate pants.

I did seriously consider the choice between "pants" and "trousers" when naming this thread, knowing that meanings can be somewhat, errr... muddled. Eventually, I went with "pants" knowing full well that the Brits would snicker.

Seriously, my knees would appreciate the built in padding.

This bears emphasis. Every time I take a knee, I am pleasantly surprised when my knee hits the pad instead of the hard concrete. It surprises me almost every time -- apparently I'm used to tearing up my knees. And since they're built into the pants, there's no discomfort from having pads strapped to your legs all day.

The Swedish company that bought the company I work for hands these out for their (Swedish) employees... We have managed to get our hands on a couple of pairs and they are really nice... I will definitely buy some more at some point.

For the most part though, I use something like 5.11 or Blackhawks as most of the places I find myself for work these days are hot and arid locales...

Thanks for that list, Monte!

just some of the common brands over here who offers that "euro-type" pants...

I bought this Blaklader setup for myself:
"work set" (pants, belt, hat) for a good price, and a jacket. Plenty of pockets...nail pockets, ID card, phone pocket etc. etc. ....triple stitches, cordura reinforced....fully loaded :)

..and this noname setup: Probably the most common work jacket over here:

....and this Gedore setup: plenty of pockets too (no nail pockets), triple stitches, cordura, for mechanics work:

Once you've got used to knee protectors in the pants you don't want to use anything else. I've had also those that are strapped around your leg and it's a pain. Don't really stay in place, gall the skin. There are quite a few makers based in Sweden for some reason, even if production is now outsourced. Jobman, FristadKansas, Snickers are those I can recall right now but there are more. Fristads is perhaps considered top of the line, but they are all good quality and design. I prefer cotton for nice cool feel, though other material may last longer and dry quicker if they get moist.
