I've resigned to using the blue shop towels these days. They used to feel expensive, but really at $2.50 per roll, if I use an entire roll for a job, it's really a drop in the bucket when changing $500 worth of parts on a vehicle or building something with $2000 in materials or something.

Agreed. Farm & Fleet often does a buck or fifty cents off and I stock up then. Cheaper than the viva...

I used to get used towels in bulk like my friend Mr. Pines, but when I started final assembly on my BBC I stopped using cloth and just never went back. Why? Two unrelated professional engine builders told me to use paper towels during engine assembly. Apparently paper towels "lint" will break down in engine oil and not block up the passages like cotton or cloth.

That's why I get actual surgical towels... not shop rags... surgical towels... the real ones... won't lint...

I agree with you about the no lint for "normal" use, but I guarantee if you pulled one just the right way across the mating face of a bearing cap, other such machined edge or rough spot on a casting, it would leave behind fuzz of some sort.

I field dress old cotton tees from the thrift store. Have a big paper cutter, 4 bucks a yard bag full. Once in a while find a great wearable tee.

I just let friends and family know I need old shirts for rags now I have more than I know what to do with.

That designed kitchen towel is also what we have but my wife doesn't want me to use it and I'm like "why buy it"? She said it is just for design..so what we originally use is just the ordinary white ones.

If you locate where local hospitals have their surgical rags cleaned, you can sometimes buy them in bulk. If other hot rodders or painting contractors in the area know about it, it will be luck of the draw. We used to split bags, about $20 a bag. I still have a bunch stashed. Our club or another would usually buy up a bunch at once if someone was there at the right time.
