Amongst my latest haul was this little doozy,

It's a 3/8th drive with push button release, and I must confess I've never seen one before.

It could do with a rebuild kit, or at minimum a set screw as it has one missing.

Any of you guys seen or heard of Par-X before?

He is due around tomorrow so I will ask him then, I'm not overly hopefull as they aren't common in the wild here. How would I work out how old it is?

Par-X was made from about the early 70's to about the mid 80's as a low cost alternative to the pricier Snap-on main line. Some dealers sold them some did not and the ones that did usually sold them to save a sale and didn't actively promote them. The line was fairly limited.

The ratchet takes the same rebuild kit as it's contemporary SO sibling. At the time it was a 20 tooth ratchet but that kit is NLA the 30 tooth fits and works fine and is readily available. If this one is quick release someone converted it with a SO kit from a qr ratchet Par-X never came that way from the factory.

Par X was a brand of Snap on, I believe it was like the Blue Point line before Blue Point existed.

Blue Point was added in the 20's long before Par-X ever came out. Originally BP was a separate company and SO sold BP wrenches later buying the company and adding the brand to the line.

Well the good news is my excellent Snap On guy knew exactly what it was, and like you noted that it wasn't originally a quick release ratchet.

He's given it a check over, oiled it and found a new screw for it, which is way beyond what I expected of him, although I must confess whilst I was on the van, a 3/8 drive dual80 winked at me...
