FYI - I was just in the clearance section of the Ikea in Paramus NJ and they had 3 pallets of "Numerar" Birch butcher block counter tops sitting there at 50% off.

73-1/4 x 39-3/8 x 1-1/? (assuming 1-1/2) for $97.50 each.

The top in the first picture is pretty warped - so I don't know what the rest look like. I'm not even sure this is a good price - but just giving you a head up.

They are a discontinued item as I see references on the web but nothing on Ikea's site.

Cheers

Jim

That's a pretty good price from Ikea, the 25x75 was on sale for 110 when I was at the store in Houston a few weeks ago. I would have been tempted for bench tops. I got oak for some desk tops, they had 95" that had been cut down to 85 for less than the 75.

:thumbup:Thanks Jim! I have one I bought 3 years ago for my Kitchen Island. I could use another for a Workbench Island I'd like to build in the Garage.

They were $9.90 in New Haven,CT IKEA. They are 1/8 natural wood over MDF.

Ikea is the kind of composite materials (yummy mdf sandwiched between veneers) but these tops are solid wood.

They would make a decent bench top if perfect flatness isn't required - based on the salad bowl shaped example in the first picture.

I have had a similar Ikea butcher block top on my bottom box for ~5 years. It was great for the first year and then it got really warped.

He's saying he likes stainless better.

I disagree, I'd rather not have a surface that dents easily for beating **** on, but to each is own.

Depends what you are working on. I use a lot of harsh solvents, grease, brake and parts cleaner, and wet things on my bench. Stainless holds up much better, wood gets ruined.

I have a hybrid approach. A butcher block top (but not Ikea). But then I have a large sheet of stainless steel I put on top when I want to use harsh chemicals.

I got a bunch of sheets of free stainless steel from some old large stainless steal refrigerator doors I cut up and cannibalized.

I bought a stack of these as many as I could ge in my car for $10.00 ea.

It is the bench top to the left and the shelves up top...same counter tops cut in half.
