I got the park or patio bench out of the subdivision community dumpster 2 years ago and was just needing time to restoring it.
Before_pic_1.jpg
Then need to remove the rust - lots of time spent with the hand held drill with brass wire wheel brush for about 4 hours over 2 days.

Then primed the steel with self etching auto primer and 2 coats of good quality dark green gloss spray paint.
.
Then I started on the wood. 2 - 1"x8"x8' Oak wood ($84) . I looked through about 15 boards before I found the ones with great grain. Then cut it down to 48" lengths with the Mitre saw and then ripped to 2-1/8" slats on the table saw for a total of 12 boards.
.
Jig for drilling the holes (24 times for hole then 24 more times to countersink with the forstner bit).

Sanded from 80 to 200 to 400 grit sandpaper and applied 2 coats of Watco Danish Oil stain - sanding between coats with 0000 steel wool.

Sorry _ i don't know why the pics are rotated.
Then added 3 coats of Helmsman Spar Urethane Gloss sanding between each coat. Added 24 stainless bolts and other support hardware.

First - Very conscientious VERY NICE quality work!!

Seriously, especially w the Stainless usage, and the detail, love, and care on the wood finish.

That said and acknowledged........

If it was done w intention of resale, 95% +of buyers will not pay the premium $ for Stainless.

They just don't get it, not experienced/ educated enough on that kind of thing.

And it cost you , I dunno, off the cuff $20+ upcharge for stainless.

If you are selling it , not keeping it, it a hell of a great moneymaking / hour opportunity!!!!!! :shocking:

Oh, and sandblasting is your Friend for next time. :)

Wire wheeling that 3d ornateness??

Hey, but otherwise, great work!!!

Beautiful work (but lots of work for resale) on a great project !!! Marc

great points Marc,
Yeah - not making any money here. I'm retired. I wish I had a sandblasting unit.
I'm at $84 for wood, 16 for the bolts and 1 threaded rod, I had the stain and the minwax poly already on the shelf. If I could sell it for $100 I would call it good - I'm going to ask $150.
If I don't sell, no worries - it will make a good perch for sniping squirrels with my pellet gun. Or I might donate it to someone.

Thanks guys' I appreciate it. I mostly wrench - I've done a Jeep CJ7 restoration - but I'm new to woodwork and loving it - but spending money on new tools is always fun.
I may have to sell a few guns to get a better quality table saw and band saw.
