I picked a Parker 271 Vise, it is in nice shape for a 100 year old vise. The swivel rear jaw was not frozen as many are. It was dusty and dirty, I cleaned it up and lubed it too. I could not remove the pin holding in the rear jaw, it would not budge. As the rear jaw is moving freely I will leave it as is. This one I will keep, I've been looking for a Parker swivel jaw vise for a while.

First for me too. I've bought and sold many vises, but I've never seen one like that. Good find.

They don't show up that often. I looked at a few over the last few years, both were beat to hell and not worth my time. I jumped on this one quickly when I saw it. I got lucky as I don't think it would have lasted long on the market.

I just acquired a similar model, mine is a 384 1/2A. Is your pin holding in the rear swivel jaw solid or a roll pin? Mine is a roll pin and I do want to remove the rear jaw but I don’t want to damage anything. Also, is there any chance you could tell me the thread type of the set screw that keeps the handle from moving on the spindle. Mine is missing. I included a pic of mine FYI.

My pin is solid holding the rear jaw. The screw is a 5/16-18, mine came with a bolt head screw. I cut the head off and cut a slot into it.

The original setup is a small set screw, a spring, then a steel ball. I'm trying to find a set screw with a ball bearing at the tip. They make them, I just need the correct size.

I cannot remove the long pin holding the rear, the top tapered knob comes out fine. I don't want to damage the vise trying to remove a 100 year old pin. May some heat would help, not sure. Sorry for all the replies

Thanks for the info. My tapered pin holding the rear jaw square was stuck but I was able to punch it out from the bottom after removing the vise from the base. I can’t believe it’s the original pin. I later thought to ask you the length of the spring under the handle retention set screw but it sounds like yours is missing too.
I will probably attempt knocking out the pin that retains the rear jaw so I can strip everything.
You have a nice vise that will be around for a long time!

Your tapered pin does not look original but if it fits correctly then that's good. Maybe you can round off the top of the pin, that would look more original. You should be able to find a solid pin to hold the rear jaw, good luck.

I just inherited a Parker 271 from my dad, it looks nearly identical to yours with 2 exceptions. Mine doesn't have the bolt-down flange showing. The base is a steel circle that fits under the vice so the bolts are all hidden. The other thing, that might not be original on mine, is the base swivel doesn't have a tee handle to tighten it down. It has a removable pin that fits into holes in the base. I don't have the jaw swivel pin, instead I have something with a hole through the center that is jammed into the top of the swivel. I'm able to swivel the jaw, with a hammer, but I can't get it to turn as far as the picture above. If I could get the hole past the body of the rear jaw I could probably knock it out from the bottom. I'm still soaking it in Evaporust but its not really rusty.

Set screw

After allll that being said, the set screw on that one will fit through a HD screw guage as a M8
