Hey all, long story short, someone locally has a Parker 272 that appears to be in good condition and he's looking to trade/sell it, but I'm having trouble coming up with a fair value.

Before going any further, I'd ask two favors to try keeping this on topic.

One, before someone says "whatever someone is willing to pay" please don't waste the post. While it's true, we all know there is usually a fair market value for most things that aren't incredibly rare. I'm simply asking what you might consider a fair price...both as a seller and a buyer.

Two, if you don't like swivel jaws or swivel bases, and don't think they're worth extra money, that's great but not really what this is about.

4.5" swivel jaw, about 70lbs, no damage, jaw swivels and seems to have the original pin.

Around me I could easily sell that vise for $200. Maybe more. Ive picked them up for as little as $25. I wouldn't pay anymore than $100-$125 if you are looking to flip it. Just my opinion.

Looks pretty minty, I'd hope it would be worth $250 or so in the open market, possibly more than that on Ebay, but have to figure Ebays costs and added aggravation. I don't actually need it, so probably wouldn't pay more than $125, but then I'm a bottom feeder.

I think the others are pretty close on value, but if you have to ask, we're all in trouble. ;)

That vise is ready to use.

GMAN: as you are starting these threads i know you are aware that your sellers are reading them so $50 Wilton bullets might become as rare in your area as they are here.

that said i'll be happy to give you my 2 cents instead of in an email if it will help you and others learn a bit more about vises.

Personally i don't pay much for Parker vises and for two reasons. one there are not many around my area and the jaws are so unique that they need to custom made by a machinist which i am not. also for some reason maybe cause they were too heavy to ride on the back of horses and the guys taking trains didn't want to bother bringing them back here cause there just isn't that many around the west coast. or somebody has a helluva collection i haven't seen yet.

ok for what i'd pay would probably be less than $150 and if it was today probably less cause i'm trying to slim down and i think i own more than a few swivel jaw vises still. I own mostly Prentiss swivel jaw vises and i think i still have one or two Rock Island and Reeds.

for what it's worth i don't shop Ebay (i'm guessing you checked past sales) which maybe is why i don't need a warehouse for my vises when i caught the vice for vises vice. i'd say any 4 inch swivel jaw 100 ish old vise is worth $200 and probably more if it actually is in working condition.

Thanks guys....unfortunately, you're sort of saying what I was thinking. It could vary quite a bit. Local sales are slow for anything that isn't a Wilton, and I doubt many folks would even know what a swivel jaw vise is. That pretty much means it would have to be an eBay project, and that makes it more complicated.

GMan: or an investment or KEEPER cause i don't see prices on Swivel jaw prices going down EVER.

since i own a few my upper end value might not be correct cause when i show people these vises even though i'm not selling any their bottom lips drop in awe and they want one.

if you can make a trade you'll be the one to determine where you want to invest or what you want to collect. i can't recall if you already have one or several swivel jaw vises, but you should own a couple of them.
