I just picked up a Chas Parker 954 1/2 that's in very good shape other than completely covered in surface rust. I disassembled it and noticed the number 39 on the back of the half moon screw retainer. Curious if that is a part number or a manufacture date?

The early parts lists show the part as #3 or #9. some with letters, eg 9a.

I look at 2 catologs. one with a date in it Jan. 22, 1912 which shows the #9 parts. The other not dated, references vises patented January 2, 1906 with the #13 parts. My guess is that they streamlined their lines at sometime or another and settled on the #39 parts, when that happened I don't know.Interesting. Is there any way to date one base on the tag on the side or changes to the shape of the casting?
