DISCRIPTION:
The pole barn was built in 1986 and is 36' x 48' with 12' at the eves. The roof has a gentle 4-12 pitch. The roof has one layer of black asphalt shingles on tar paper on OSB particle board. Gable ends face east & west with roof faces sloping north and south. It has steel sheeting siding with vented soffiting on all sides. The ridge isn't vented rather has semi-translucent lite panels the full ridge length that pass ALOT of natural light into the space (open rafters inside - no ceiling).
ISSUE:
The south face of the shingles is in REALLY BAD shape! Although the roof isn't leaking rainwater that I know if yet, it has shingles missing, curling up, etc. However, the northern face looks like it was laid down last year!
So,,,, what I'm thinking of only replacing the south face shingles. The south face shingles are way to bad to even think about laying a new layer over the old ones, so they must come off. I'd likely try to maintain or replace the tar paper as necessary. I'm also thinking of changing to a grayish tint shingle rather than the current black color in an effort to reduce the amount of heat it would absorb and increase it's heat-reflecting quality. Yeah, the north side would be black and the south side would be gray, but so what?
I really like the current ridge "light" panels, but I'd likely change them out with some new panels, since they are cracked in a few locations now and have the expected weathering.
The building isn't heated, so I'm not too concerned about ice shielding or such.
QUESTIONS:
a) Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions with my above plan?
b) What brand/type of shingle is recommended these days to get the "best-bang-for-his-buck"?
Thanks in Advance for any & all advice and suggestions!
