I decided a few years ago that I was tired of futzing around with all of my little jars and boxes of screws and small parts containers. Though I inherit a hoarding tendency when it comes to these things from my late grandfather, an archetypal Depression-era saver and a repurposing genius.

A parts cabinet of some kind has been on my todo list since then. I have a history of picking up a handy cabinet of some sort or another, pressing it into service and later discovering it doesn't fit my needs as well as I had hoped. I then sell it off at a loss and keep looking for the just the right fit. So, the end result tends to find me building a custom job from scratch because I'm way too picky about that Perfect Solution. The problem with this approach is that the custom cabinet and fixture list gets so long that I can never find time to produce projects in the shop like furniture for my house. So, sometimes I need to reconsider a prefab solution for the sake of moving on to the rest of the todo list.

Yesterday I stumbled on a great cabinet at my local ReStore. Finding exactly what I need/want at the right time is always tricky with the ReStore, but yesterday the stars seemed to align.

A great deal at 25 bucks, I'd say.

As a bonus, I had a formica cutoff lying around from another project and it happened to be *exactly* the same width and the perfect depth to allow me to pull the cabinet forward from the wall a bit to create a useful top space.

It was a fine afternoon spent cleaning up the space for it and organizing all my parts, hinges and bolts into it. I often enjoy that process as much as I do working on projects in the shop.

I'm also realizing some advantages to a steel cabinet versus wood for this purpose:

1. Drawers at this size are tougher in steel since I'm probably pulling them in and out all the time to look for the right part.

2. Far less concern about oil and dirt because they're much easier to clean, if necessary.

WOW, great deal. What are the dimensions? Are the drawers on slides or do they just rest on pieces of angle type brackets? No doubt, you ****

Very nice score.

I have a similar one from my Father-In-Law, and consider these types of storage cabinets to be one of the "Essential" pieces of a well-organized garage.

Coincidentally I also paid $80 each for my 2 card file cabinets about 2 years ago and I would likewise pay that again for a few more. These things hold a TON of stuff!
