Parts Cabinet Stand

I removed my parts cabinet from the bench top to make room for the drill press. I needed to make a stand for the cabinet so I made this last night with scrap metal that’s been in the shop for several years.

Welded nuts in the bottom of the legs for bolts so I can level the cabinet.

Went down today and put on the first coat of paint. Then I removed the handles from the 30 drawers by drilling out the two rivets. I plan on sandblasting and painting the handles since they started to rust. The drawers will have the faces painted blue the rest will stay gray.

Rustoleum Sail Blue? Looks like what I have been painting my cabinets with.

I finished the cabinet a few days ago. I picked up two rolls of shelf liner from wall mart to line the drawers. They were 7 and some tall change per roll. I made a wood template of the drawers out of some scrap ¼” plywood. Thirty drawers to line made it quick going with the template. The only problem is with the liner in the drawer my favorite containers for small hardware rub when shutting the drawer. Without the liner there is just enough clearance. I like the small ziplock containers with the screw on lids.

Rustoleum Sail Blue? Looks like what I have been painting my cabinets with.

The color is Rustoleum royal blue, in stock at Home Depot and Lowes around here.

Getting too cold to be painting now but the next on the list is the vidmar that I picked up.

I think the vidmar will be easier to paint than the parts cabinet.

There are 5 base cabinets with a lot of drawers. The total length is about 15 feet. They will be on the list after the vidmar but it's not one that I am looking forward to.

I took the drawer out of this one to check on how much work would be involved in the prep work.

I checked on a price to have them powder coated, a little over $1,000.00 I think I will paint them.

Kobalts hvlp small gravity feed gun. It was about 30 bucks from Lowes. I also have the larger one but I like the small on the best. It depends on how much paint I have to spray.

What did you do to prep the cabinet surface and what kind of primer did you use? I am getting ready to paint some Vidmar cabinets that I believe are powdercoated. I was planning to rough them up with 400 sandpaper and start with primer. What is your plan with your vidmar?

I do a light sanding and prime with rustoleum clean metal primer. I top coat and do another light sanding with 600 grit and then a second coat. The parts cabinet required a third coat and I did sand again before the third coat with 600 grit. The inside drawers of the vidmar are in real good shape so I will on paint the face of the drawers. The last coat I also wet the ground around where I am painting.

When reducing paint- how do you know when it's right or not?

If you air spray you must thin the paint. The trick is to thin enough to spray but if you thin too much or you will be putting another coat on. When the paint starts to come off the stir stick like it was water works for me. You must also resist the urge to fully cover in one coat, thats the best way to get a case of the runs. I thin with mineral spirts but you can use acetone. For me I find it best to spray a little and let the solvent flash off and spray the part again.
