Bio diesel has alcohol in it so it stands to reason it would clean better. The PSC 1000 is such a more mild odor than diesel I’d much rather use it than diesel.

OK, a little bump. Using a combo of gas/diesel for big stuff and carb soak for anything that will fit in a gallon can, and then using a water based cleaner (many of them work as well as the next), I'm getting it done.

But my 3 gal. bucket of Evaporust is dead whether I heat it or not. I'm not buying anymore of that (expensive). I had asked on another thread (https://www.garagejournal.com/forum...end-archoil-rust-remover.481633/#post-9101990) if that stuff Archoil was any good. It's sold in concentrate so I like that I can make as much or as little as I need and toss it when its finished working.

Anything else you guys know about rust and cleaning in general?

I do strip paint from hardware like hinges and knobs in an electric frying pan with TSP.

Ain’t cheap but I have stripped old OLD lead paint in B12 Chemtool (I think is the name) fuel injection cleaner. It’ll come off in sheets - very impressive. Filter the cleaner and reuse it.

Also, Home Depot sells something they call Concrete and Metal Prep. It’s phosphoric acid and I use it all the time to remove rust from anything except aluminum.57660C12-F3E5-4DED-80F0-09A84656C1A5.jpeg

I just picked up another 5 gal can of parts cleaner at TSC. I won't need it soon but, living in CA, I can't count on any useful chemical being available next time I want to buy some.

Zeke...#30 above,
get yourself a $10 used Crock Pot at the local thrift store...I've used one for years with just plain water, and it removes layers and layers of old paint in a few hours, or overnight if really tough.
I cooked some ornate victorian hinges overnight and they came out completely clean, just a quick scrub with a wire brush.
no harm, no real effort. highly recommended.

you know that a good idea, get a heating element, heat the water in the solvent tank, add soap. run through the pump

Can you still buy "universal solvent" at auto paint supply stores? There's gotta be some of those in the Long Beach area.
