Found a Sears Dunlap drill press locally that needs a little work. After chatting with the seller, the motor runs fine, but the chuck does not stay on the spindle. Sounds like some type of retention collar is missing??

Is this easily fixed? For $50, I may buy it regardless.

Need to see pictures.

The ones that I'm familiar with use a tapered shaft that is friction fitted into the quill. The shaft on the chuck assembly may be damaged or dirty, or the inside of the quill shaft may be dirty. Either would stop the chuck from seating properly.

Locate the issue. If it's the chuck shaft then a cleaning, or repair of the damage may fix the problem.

Every now and then, the chuck on my grandfather's DP pops out. I just clean up the parts, slide it back in, and give it a light tap with a rubber mallet to seat it.

I've had the one off on mine before. Don't lose the key, they're kinda hard to find. Ask me how I know. My dad gave me this one. I had to replace the motor on this one but now it works great.

I will not have good pictures until after I buy it as the ones from his ad don't show much. And now that it was mentioned, I definitely plan to ask about the chuck key.

Thanks for the feedback as this is my venture into older tools like this, but I feel better about $50 for this one needing work than buying one from HF :D

Meeting the seller in the morning, so I will post up some pictures tomorrow night.

Confirmed he has the chuck key, so this should be a done deal in the morning. Can't wait as I have been holding off a couple little projects that could have been done with a hand drill... but this will make it so much easier.
