In the process of purchasing 10 acres and having a 40 x 60 x 16 metal building built. I have a lot of auto parts I need to store and not take up floor space. At first I was just going to build a platform across one end and put it all on that. Then I started thinking about shipping containers. Has anyone put 8 foot legs on one and used it for storage?

I would just build a mezzanine in one end of your building. Put that in the design and it will be a wealth of storage space.

To expensive....like paying for two buildings. That's why I'm looking for other options.

maybe not. I bought the frame out from under a trailer house, cut it to 20' lengths and built my second level with that then floored it with previously used 2X6s I had. I paid for the metal frame but it wasnt much. 20'X20'

What about picking up some used pallet racking ?

It doesn't free up floor space but it would be cheaper. Might be cheaper to build it 10 ft longer and use pallet racking than it would be to purchase used shipping containers and try to fabricate something to get it up and off the ground.

I am doing a few out of containers right now. Here is a pict. For simple storage they are very cost effective. For a complicated structure they are far more expensive than traditional construction

I think I would go with pallet racking, pallets and a fork lift. Tried and true.

That's wild moonpool. What will the end use of those be?

Somehow that background does not look like "South Florida."
Nice idea on the containers though.

+1 as looks like NM, AZ or CA.

Let's SEE a full new thread on shipping container storage/shop build !! :D

OP . . . . I'd do all three. Pallet racks on tallest wall of shop and get a forklift. Mezzanine level for warm storage or entertainment space. Finally, couple shipping containers outside for long-term cold storage.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I guess I'll just get 2 10' and 1 40' and use the 10' ones under each end.

why would a mezzanine be too expensive compared to shipping containers? You're putting up a 40x60x16 on a ten acre plot but worried about the cost of a mezzanine? I don't get it. Have you had a mezzanine priced out? I don't know what your gonna be paying for the shipping containers but around here a big one is probably around 2 grand.

My thoughts exactly, but what do I know?...

It's more than 2,000 just for the steel to build a freestanding platform and then I need decking. It's going to have to wait I guess. Lots of other things sucking up all the money right now.

Pallet racks (used) are quite cost effective and allow for storage of a lot of weight without a significant loss of floor space.

Pallet racks are definitely great. Heck, I've even got a small one of those in my bedroom at the moment (though sort of temporarily)...

...Is this another one of those "you must not be married" posts? I think it might be.

...either "you must not be married" OR "she hasn't seen it yet".

...and I have some in the garage to store "stuff". I'm not sure how she would react to me putting it in the house...

At a place I worked at 15 years ago, they made a mazzanine out of a rows of pallet racking. Make an area at the bottom tall enough to walk under comfortably, place a couple shelves above that for storage of larger less used items, then place a couple layers of plywood on the top. If you had tall enough racking you could even make it a double decker mezzanine.

The place I was at didn't make it walkable underneath, but the size of it was about 50 feet long by 15 feet deep.
