I picked up a used 20 gal parts washer today. $40 and needs a pump. I stopped at princess auto on the way home and grabbed a pump. As I ripped it apart, I started to get bad ideas about re engineering it. Here is my though; the pump currently sits in a housing inside the work area. This means the work area will always have to have 2-3" of solvent in it. I will have to use the rack that sits inside it. My idea is to put a drain in the bottom, and mount a plastic oil pail under it. The pump would be submerged in the pail. This would allow me to do away with the rack and pump housing, making more working room up top. It would also keep the solvent farther away from any sources of ignition. I have seen units that come this way, but has anyone ever converted one? Is it a good idea, or should I just put the damn pump in and be done with it?
