Varsol, paint thinner, I have 2 tanks one has paint thinner for final cleaning, the other has diesel for the really cruddy parts.... If you do a search on here you will find a lot of good info on what to use

at school we use varsol and it does a great job, but we are pretty up on "pre-cleaning" - at least knocking some of the dirt and grime off, before you use the varsol. It lasts several months with 18-20 student techs using it.

I've used Varsol since the early '70s. I use a water filtration system and it stays pretty clean so I don't buy a lot of it. When I do I just pick up a 3.78 litre (1 US gal.) jug at Canadian Tire for $12.

Parts Solvent - 76 Union stuff - available 5 gallon jugs
Too bad the local distributor no longer sells the stuff in bulk aka bring your own jug
A bit pricey but does the job just fine
Believe my tank is about 20 gallons the stuff lasts me 6 to 8 years
Getting the large crud off before in depth cleaning helps

I've been using mineral spirits for years, some parts stores sell by the 5 gallon bucket or the big box home improvement stores have it by the gallon.

I know Safety KLean was just in at work last week and it was 198.00 for service on ours so that wouldn't be an option.

I too use the crown psc 1000 from tractor supply. All it is is naphtha, which is a more refined karosene

Sell quite of bit of Solvent 142 (mineral spirits) for use in parts washers. If memory serves, it is like $6 per gallon in pails and less than $5 per gallon in drums.

Stoddard solvent is an old standby. Don't remember price.
Zep is another option. Tons of stuff. Again, don't know price.
I have a zep parts cleaner. It has a filter to keep out particulates. It has a canvas bag filled with some magic **** that removes the oil from the solvent... hence lasting much longer.

I have the dyna clean. In an engine shop application. I like it, but it is expen$ive. Ebay, maybe?

I also use the Tractor Supply Crown.

I put in a large oil spin-on Fram oil filter thru which the solvent flows to help keep it cleaner. Has been in use about a year now, still seems to work well, just a slight tinge of yellowing.

If one googles "parts washer filter extension" its a brainchild of an iowa extension office, in .pdf form.

I got to wonder what the gain is? It's not really a problem. It isn't dirt that hurts much, that settles out.Oil and grease contaminate it.

Speaking of Safety Kleen, their "green" solvent is recycled 105º (flash point) mineral spirits. They also offered 140º flash, usually for industrial applications.

just checked our pricing on Mineral Spirits and its 9.62 per for 5 gallons and 8.96 per on 55 gal drum. I'll mosey out to shop and try to identify what size the Safety Kleen tank is.

Safety Kleen tank- small is 15gal and large is 30gal. Safety Kleen puts water in their tanks so its not totally mineral spirits.

Yes the drums are "15 gallon" and "30 gallon". They only fill them about half full. As a former Safety Kleen rep, at the branch I worked at (Schaumburg IL circa 1990), we never put water in the mineral spirits. Water and mineral spirits do not mix. If there was water it would sink to the bottom and that's all the pump would pump out. It wouldn't have any benefit. Now, since then, they may have introduced water soluble parts washers that have some type a water base cleaner.

And how and where do you dispose of the "old" stuff? And do you have the parts cleaners in your garages attached or otherwise? Doesn't stink up the place?

I priced a barrel today for giggles.Right around 8 a gallon, 420. I am going to ask the guy at auto parts. I bet they got something cheaper and in 5 gallon pails. I only need 25 gallons. I keep the cover closed and don't use it much.

This one?

Thanks for the suggestion. :)

I don't have the "drum" style, and they don't show the plumbing connection to the machine (just the filter head) so I'm expecting the hoses are just plumbed in the line that feeds the washer nozzle?

If so that will be a bit of a PITA to plumb on mine. :(

I take it to a hazardous waste transfer depot here in town. No cost and no questions asked provided you tell them what is (you don't & they won't). I use Varsol in and the very minor smell doesn't bother me.

What pumps are you guys using? Mine is possibly an Emco (small plastic impeller) I think and based on its design, I doubt it would have the pressure to push through a filter. Are you using gear pumps?

Here's my experience. The wife bought me a Harbor Freight 40 gal some years back and I filled it with a water based solvent that really didn't work too well on anything except the paint in the tank. What I found out is that the Chinese made tank is leak tested based on the paint. Once it ate through the paint, several pinholes in the welds revealed themselves and made a mess on the floor. Cleaned it out and soldered up a few but it ended up being a game of whack a mole. Pure junk IMHO. Bought a used 15 gallon Greymills on CL and it works great with the PSC1000 from Tractor Supply. I used double trash bags as liners for the drum to make disposal eventually easier. Pump out the liquid, pull the box from the 15 gal drum base and take the liners to the county waste disposal site. That's the plan anyway. The solvent seems to get along well with the trash bag liners so far.
