When I used to do car stuff in Michigan, I just used kerosene in mine. It cleaned very good and would last a long time. Where abouts in Michigan are you located?

I bought a 5 agllon can of parts washer solution from Advance auto parts, dumped it into the washer, went with the same empty metal can and filled it with off road diesel fuel and added that. I like it because it cleans good without the incredible fumes that seem to build up in the shop on hot summer days. Plus, I can smoke a cigarette while using it. I'm just joking, I don't smoke.

In looking at the old treads that Charles posted ...one of them mentions that the Cleaner from Advance Auto states that it contains rust inhibitor.....that would be a plus but it also must be leaving a film of some sort ......I'm amazed at how quick a rusty haze starts to cover freashly cleaned steel or iron parts after being cleaned in Mineral Spirits...Tom

I use the stuff from Advance and I replace it every two or three years depending on the amount of use.

I buy a cleaning solvent from Chevron, any chevron oil dealer carries it. Its been forever since I bought some, but I think it was about $40.00 and it comes in a 5 gallon bucket. Works great!
