Parts Washer

Hey guys,

Wondering who has a parts washer in their shop? I was given NIB a small bench top parts washer and a couple gallons of the fluid?

It would be nice to have in operation when I get my shop finished but it I dont want to dedicate any bench space or floor space for something I would only use for a few min on every other project. I thought about building it inset into my work bench when I build a new one. I would cut the top of the bench/cover so you could remove it flip open the washer use it and put the cover/bench top back when done.

Any tips or tricks to using one or is it worth going through the effort for such a small one? Thanks

That is a pretty good idea, there could be various ways to do it too, a drawer even.

I have seen this idea before in race trailers. The parts washer is recessed into the work bench and is hidden, until you need to use it.

We have a bigger unit 48"x 32" not sure how many gallons it takes...

but it has a steel flip up lid and We sometimes use it as a bench. At times its a pain when some starts a project and you need to clear the top to use it... if it just you it would probably be just fine tho....


The only major tips I would give are

1. I find if something is extreme dirty or greasy, I tend to hose off the crud first then detail it in the parts washers... it will make the cleaning solution last much long...

2. Make sure the fluid your using is compatible with the materials you plan on washing

3. Use Gloves and Glasses at the min for Safety...

I have a floor model parts washer and I have my sandblasting cabinet parked on top of it to save space.

I have a 20 gallon HF unit, using PCS 1000 cleaning solvent. I made a 2x wood base for it, put casters on that and move it where I need it. Doubles as a small portable work surface.

I have the 20gallon HF model. put it on rollers and leave it out in the carport. I run varsol and don't like the smell in the shop.

I use awesome from the dollar store, Works great and it is water based.

I keep mine on a shelf when not needed and keep the solvent in a sealed container so it won't evaporate. Have had 29 days over 100* and as high as 109*. Hope it cools down SOON.

That a great idea.

In my first place (thirty years ago) I had a stainless steel sink in my bench top. Underneath, I had a five gallon pail of solvent and a old power steering pump driven by an 1/4hp electric motor.

I have a floor model parts washer, but I let a buddy of mine take it home and use it about 3 years ago and he still has it. I don't really mind too much, I seldom used it anyway and I can still go to his house and use it anytime I want. But in another way, I feel that since it is mine so it should be at my house. Then again, I have his pizza oven in my garage and I have had it for over 2 years now. So I guess it all works out.
