So I picked up a used $20 Paslode Impulse framing nailer at a garage sail and I want to clean it up before using it. 2 questions 1. What can I used on the exterior plastic part of the gun? Was thinking simple green degreaser

2. Found a Youtube vid on cleaning the insides and lubrication instructions, but I don't want to pay for the fancy expensive Pasloade cleaning spray and lube. Can I just use some brake cleaner or carb cleaner spray and maybe some gun oil?

Thanks, Chet

No brake cleaner, no carb cleaner, unless you feel like replacing seals. Exterior, I like to use ether, it'll make it look just about new. If you plan to tear it down to clean up the insides, I use shop towels to wipe everything of and then simple green a toothbrush and a final wipe down with 99% rubbing alcohol. During reassembly lube all o-rings, and other wear points.

This year I've done upwards of 50 nail gun rebuilds

Thanks for the advice. When you say ether for the exterior, do you mean spray aerosol and where do you buy that? What type of brand of lube for the o-rings?

Thanks again

Oring lube I use a silicone dielectric from 3m, though you can use silicone food grade if you have that handy for say a meat grinder. The ether is glycol ether for cleaning spray guns, but it really cleans up tool handles and plasticized rubbery type materials. Though in a pinch you can use starting fluid.

If you remove the o-rings from the piston and cylinder, sure, brake cleaner will work fine. However it wont work for the head/fan/spark assembly. I have used plastic/rubber safe electrical cleaner for that with no ill affects. Dont forget to clean the air filter screen.

The Paslode cleaner is worth the price, in my opinion, as it can be used for everything.
