Pass-through garage

I have a 16 x 30 attached garage, that goes from the front of the house to the back... and not enough room on either side of the house to get a car through... Has anybody ever knocked out the back wall of their garage, put another door on it?

I had the idea that I'd have enough room in the back for a workshop, I could make the front garage for running cars and the back garage for projects... when the project is done, I could just move the running cars out, and drive it right through...

this is exactly what I'm planning for my garage build. i have a short driveway on both sides of my front yard, and a drive-thru garage would be perfect.

Never knocked down a wall to do it. But I did have one purposely built that way. I'd recommend it , it gives another space in the yard to park a car , too.

Built mine that way. So did my brother. It's handy. As long as the wall you're knocking the hole in isn't load bearing, I'd think it wouldn't be much of a problem. If it is load bearing,you need to listen to someone who knows a whole lot more about building/remodeling than I do.

Only thing is you can put stuff against that wall anymore. Not a big deal if you have a big building though. One of my Dad's garages (has 3) is 45x70 that has 6 doors in the front and 2 on one side)

I know 4 people that did the same thing. They actually layed concrete and built off the back of there shop to push out projects until they had time and room to work on them.

I was originally going to do the same thing, but the county changed codes and I have to have 15' on the side, so I decided on a drive gate next to the garage instead.

Those doors are really nice, though and if space was a concern I would certainly do something similar.

Even if its a loadbearing wall, you can build a temporary false wall inside to hold tghe weight while you tear out the back, loadbearing wall to build proper headers to hold the load.

My garage is 50' long, 9' doors & 10' ceilings, have a rear door at 9X9 with a mandoor next to it ,outside I have a 4 post lift . When it come time to do projects or get 2 cars out of the way the lift can "rid" of 2 cars and leave a 49'X20' wide inside to do what ever. I must note that here in AZ it rains very little and the lift is exposed all yr I just cover the hyd pump and the rest just gets wet.

Yep, I did that at our house on the coast. It was more for the breeze though. I eventually put up a fence and gate to keep the Great Dane in the back yard.

It's a concrete block house, and there is a small window right where the door would go... I assume I could knock out the header above the window, and put in/pour a longer one to span the distance over the door... there is a patio on the back side of that wall, so part of the rear driveway is there already.

I had my garage designed that way. The bay closest to the house has an overheard door at the rear. I have a portable garage out back with my boss in it and only three feet between garage and fence.
