I'm still trying to determine on my barn if it's cost effective to try to capture the benefit of the sun heating the steel. We have about 300 days of sunshine.

I recorded temperatures inside vs outside and it's obvious that there is a solar benefit... but capturing it is the rub.

The ceiling has 2" fiberglass batts.. and that's about it. The west wall is insulated R19, but the overhang soiffits and and ridge vent are wide open.

A dead space between insulation and the steel, with openings (that can be closed) near the floor and ceiling would allow natural convection, and ceiling fans would allow driving the heat down into the user space.

Panels to close soffit and ridge vents would also be needed.

Anybody here done anything similar or familiar enough with this kind of concept to advise if it's worth pursuing?

This photo shows the bay that I am contemplating the passive solar for the south wall, which is the wall on the left.

Polyiso sheets located on furring strips to space the insulation away from the steel siding.
